  • WCFCourier: "Farley says next 30 days important for Panthers"

"Footballs will be thrown and pads will pop for the first time this week for the Northern Iowa football team.

After having its season shut down in August because of COVID-19 precautions, the Panthers will hold their first official fall practice, the first of 15 they officially can hold over 34 days, Tuesday inside the UNI-Dome.

UNI head coach Mark Farley says it will be an important 15 days, primarily for his young players, but in general for his entire 104-man roster based on what he has observed early on with the FBS and FCS programs that have chosen to play a fall slate."

There's a couple of big takeaways from this, one, "it looks like none of them — offensive tackle Spencer Brown, defensive end Elerson Smith and safety Xavior Williams — will be around," that hurts, that hurts a whole lot. But at least we know that we're losing them now rather than finding out right before the games start.

Two, "Farley is working on a scenario where UNI will close the fall practice period with a fall game that potentially could allow limited fans." That is almost certainly going to happen, because boy howdy could they use the revenue from anything, and if they think a couple thousand people will pay 10 bucks to watch a scrimmage, they will.

Three, and perhaps the most interesting, is that one of the primary reasons that we didn't go with a real fall game was because of the cost of testing was "prohibitive." If costing was too much that it wasn't worth taking a paycheck from a P5, it's gonna need to get a lot cheaper by the time spring rolls around in order for it to be worth it then.

He said testing cost was a secondary reason and they decided the cost wasn't worth it to play one game.

Not sure a P5 paycheck was on the table and if so it would have been reduced from typical levels.
Winning is more fun than losing.
