  • Montgomery for 3

One of the biggest surprises for me this weekend was seeing Jon Montgomery shoot the 3 ball.

I didn't expect him to have that kind of range, and he's clearly not afraid to take the shot when he has an opening.

That's a nice add to the program.

He brings a ton of energy to the game whenever he plays.

Reminds me a lot of J'Litt.

I like him already. One request though: if the lanes are closed DON'T try to force it in. Otherwise this kid is aggressive playing the guard position, something we're really going to need this year as teams try to shut off our post play.

        I respectfully disagree Marc...

I would much rather see a freshman try to make things happen on an aggressive play rather than be too timid to use all of his abilities...

BTW- This kid is going to be one hell of a player for the duration of his Panther career...

Fair enough, but at some point said freshman has to learn to stop doing things that result in a turnover. The sooner, the better, and the more he can contribute in his career here.

I like Montogomery as well. What will he be like in four years?! I also would love to see Reed and Montogomery out together. That would be a very athletic 2 and 3.

I think you will see Reed, Montgomery, and Dunham a lot next year.

It's nice to have this many choices.

Don't forget this team is very young, there are 10 players that are Sophomores or Freshmen so it may be nice to have this many choices for several years.

I agree, the strength of this team is in the youth. Josten and Coleman will lead just fine, Reed and Brown bring some athleticism to the 2/3 spot. Viet does what he does, but that pales with what some of the youngsters can do.

I also liked what I saw of Barz in the exhibition games, give him a year to put on some weight so he can hold his own on the defensive blocks, and we will have a great foundation for 2 more years after this.

But this year is just starting, and as long as we aren't dealt anymore injuries (particularly to ball-handlers) this team will surprise a lot of people.

It's a great time to be a Panther!

Okay, personally, Montgomery was very impressive I agree. He shot the ball well from the outside and looks energized and ready to contribute.

But . . . at the same time, looks VERY young and raw. Like Wigim said, he did quite a few things (because of his overexcited energy) that lead to turnovers or missed opportunities this weekend. I learned my freshman year in high school, don't drive to the baseline without a plan and pick up your dribble. It will only end badly. This kid did it three times in one game.

He was fun to watch and I think will definitely contribute this season, but also has PLENTY to learn. I would hate to see that energy and athleticism praised to a point where simple mistakes like this are overlooked. He's got some learnin' to do, but he should be a nice contributer this season. I'm very excited about the future of our team. Koch, Big Jordan, Montgomery, Kerwin, all really impressed me at times this year and all have three years left with us. Should be fun to watch.

I'm not trying to start an argument here, but tell me about a freshman in any program who doesn't have plenty to learn about the college game.

Sorry, I just thought it was a little early to tell on some of the freshman that others on the board apparently seem to be gushing over. (Please don't read this in a "sarcastic" tone, I'm not being sarcastic.)

I did talk about how excited I am about our young players. Did you not read that?

Nobody on here was saying he did a bad job. He just needs to not force things, which I agree with completely. I thought he did a great job (especially considering a few weeks ago he was a likely canidaite to redshirt). His drives to the baseline usually ended with a turnover, BUT, overall he did a great job. He's going to be an exceptional defensive player down the road as well.
