Last night when Adam Viet was guarding J.R. Angle. All I could think to myself was, is this the only defensive match up Viet will have all year where he actually matches up in terms of speed and athletic ability all year?

Re: Defense
WHAT?? When has Viet EVER played good defense...
He is good for at least one dumb foul on a big that leads to an 'and one' every night. I, for the life of me, can't figure out why he played so much last night, I would much rather see Jon Montgomery getting those minutes. I really like that kid, he is going to be a very good player in this program...

Re: Defense
Thats the thing....next game Montegomery will play 25 min and Viet will play none....O'Rear will play 15 min and Jordan will play 5 min...Kerwin will play 10 min and Haak will play 5....and yet Coleman will still only play half of the game. It would help if we could try to have our best players on the floor more often, and have more consistencies in our lineup.UNI FIGHT

Re: Defense
I think it looks like Viet's D has improved...he'll never be All-Valley Defensive team but he did just fine I thought. Got the 'and one' foul preventing someone else's man from having the easy two...need to make sure when you do that foul the shot doesn't fall however. The time he fell it looked like he got tripped running through the lane. A couple weeks ago weren't people complaining about the freshman mistakes and baseline drives to nowhere that were happening on offense? Viet is knowledgeable of the offense and has it pass through him, directs some of the younger guys on the court, generally is that senior role player that can provide some stability. With the improved defense and if he can start hitting more of his 3's he could be a big help. Get about 8-10 points a game and fill some minutes without being a liability. Just my thoughts and hopes for him. Guy has had some bad luck with injuries since he's been here, seems like everytime he goes down a young player emerges while he's on the end of the bench. Montgomery will earn those minutes as it goes but he makes pretty dumb mistakes when he gets in...he'll get there and till then I think Viet will do just fine.

Re: Defense
I watched Viet handcheck his guy alot, which brings up a question -I thought that was illegal any more...I see everyone do it now. I suppose if the refs call it, it would slow the game down

Re: Defense
Wow, is all this "bashing" of Viet coming from some of the same people who claim they never "bash" players? I got raked over the coals for a few comments about Brooks' last year. Interesting . . .
I actually think Adam's defense has improved and that some of you are assuming based on last year's performance. I also noticed that during Iowa he wasn't afraid to shoot coming off a screen, whereas last year he loved being set. The kid is a senior who plays his butt off every time he's given an opportunity.
And to answer the question "why he played so much" is actually simple. Viet is the best three-point threat we have. When we're down late in a game like that, I have no problem with Coach Jake leaving him out there. He's no Josten on defense, but he played fine.

Re: Defense
I too, noticeed that he was shooting off of some curl cuts/screens. I believe one of his threes came that way. That is an added bonus as last year it seemed he would only go in when a team was playing a zone and they would switch out as soon as he came in. If he can prove to be able to catch and shoot on the move, he will be more of an asset. Teams will be afraid to play zone while he's in the game, and we are a much better overall team against man-to-man. He just needs to knock down threes when he gets the chances. He is not the most athletic defensively, but he's heady enough to not make major mistakes.Originally posted by jman2004 View PostI actually think Adam's defense has improved and that some of you are assuming based on last year's performance.
