  • Steve Deace

    Over the course of the last two weeks Steve Deace (KXNO afternoon sports show in Des Moines) has repeatedly left out the Panthers while talking about the states basketball programs. I called in 2 weeks ago when he said that this would be the third year in a row with the absence of the state of Iowa in March Madness to remind him that the Panthers made it in last year and were on their way again this year. When off the phone I was mocked on air saying that yes, he remembers everyone being on the UNI bandwagon for two weeks last year but thats it and that they won't even be considered for the tourny this year. The next day he was on the air he said people could call in if they wanted to and talk about the Panthers and then he dropped it all together again the day after that. The icing on the cake was when yesterday talking to someone involved with the RPI he spent 5 minutes talking about the Southern Illinois Fighting Saluki Dogs that eat Children and how high they were up on the RPI and made no mention at all about how the Panthers had beaten them 3 days before nor asking about the Panthers and their hopes of getting in to the tourny. The Panthers have the best chance of getting in to the Tournament as anyone in the state of Iowa, with the National exposure that we will be recieving over the next two weeks by being on the duece it is time to run with it, lets make our voices heard now through email and phone calls to guys like Steve Deace and give them no other choice than to acknowledge Panther athletics. Exposure nationally is awesome but we have to win the battle here in the state of Iowa first. I have already sent an email to Steave and asked him to please spend some time covering our ESPN2 appearances over the next two weeks on his show today. I remember when ISU was on the duece earlier this year he spent and entire segment on it and how the duece was coming to town. Lets make that happen again with us.

    You can reach Steve at stevedeace@kxno or by phone at 515 284 5966

    his show is on in central Iowa from 3-5:30 today 1460 am.

    Let's just hope that when the Deace clown requests press credentials----they are denied.
    You don't break out the Purple and Gold on game days or look for special gifts and gadgets bearing the colors because you want to be seen among the loyal. Purple and Gold aren't colors you see---they're colors you feel. They run through your veins with a continuous roar.

      I call Deace and talk UNI...

      I'm the guy who will call in and talk to him from time to time about UNI as well. He had blinders on to the fact that some people in Des Moines want Panther talk on their radios! I want it and I send an e-mail everytime they say..."the state's two big teams have games tonight!"

      All he has to do is mention it! Mention the Panthers are playing. Corey Kuhn does a good job of always mentioning that UNI has a game and it's time and location. I love Deace's show...central Iowa is lucky to have that type of show...but he needs to branch out from JUST Iowa and ISU talk all of the time.

      Hell, he had a horse racing spot last summer. If he can have a spot for equine racing...why can't he have a weekly with Gary Rima? How hard would it be?

        jegbomb52, why would you say UNI has the best shot at the big dance of any Iowa school? I'd say UNI has to win the conference tournament to make it. ISU has the best chance as long as they play the way they have the last couple of weeks.

          No offense Cy...

          But even with their recent upswing...isn't ISU still under .500 in the Big 12? Right now, according to the RPI, Iowa still has the best chance, but I think it's a toss up between ISU and UNI... let's not forget UNI has a 17 point win over ISU this season. Good luck to you the rest of the way though....every win for ISU is a boost to UNI's RPI!

          ISU is 12-8, 4-5

          They have games with

          Texas Tech
          Kansas State
          @Kansas
          @Texas A&M
          Missouri
          Nebraska
          @Colorado
          Big 12 Tourney

          So, let's say they finish 4-4 in those last 8 games. They would be 16-12 with an 8-8 record in a weak Big 12. Would they get in with a 16-12 record?

            Good idea. I sent my e-mail! In Steve's defense, when he does have a college basketball "expert" on, he usually will ask questions about UNI and their tournament chances. If more people would call during open phone time and mention the Panthers, he would have to talk about them on his show. If no one calls, of course he is going to think it is not a topic worth discussing on a regular basis.

              Agreed...

              Ceasar...you nailed it! More Panther fans need to become VOCAL Panther fans. When UNI fans start e-mailing and calling about the Panthers ALL OF THE TIME, that's when people like Deace will stand up and take notice.

              Lots of people in Des Moines listen to his show, if you're a UNI fan and can pick up KXNO (1460 AM) from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM, listen and CALL IN when they have open line time. Talk Panther sports!

                I wasn’t coming on here to bash UNI. I posted back when ISU was losing every game. I read the site several times a week. I saw this post and didn’t see how anyone could say UNI has the best chance of the 3 schools. If you go by rpi then Iowa has the best chance, if you go by current trends then ISU does.

                Here are some random thoughts, feel free to disagree with all of them.

                I don't see how the Big 12 is weak, the last Sagarin I saw had the Big 12 3rd overall and the Valley 7th. The 3rd conference overall isn’t what I consider weak. If you consider 3rd weak, what do you think about 7th?

                If you go by the rpi only then currently Iowa has the best chance. ISU's rpi has gone up by about 50 in the last couple of weeks and with games like Kansas still left it will go up more.

                There will be more weight given to teams who did well in the second half the season rather than the first half.

                I was saying if the current trend of Iowa losing, ISU winning, and UNI doing both continues then ISU will have the best chance of the 3 of being selected. I also think the rpi will reflect this at the end of the season.

                I think UNI will get in by winning the conference tournament so it's a moot point. I don't see ISU or Iowa doing the same. I do think ISU has a good shot at getting in by overall record and finishing the season strong, IF the play keeps going like it has been.

                With 7 regular season games left I would guess Vegas has ISU going 5-2 or 4-3. Your prediction of 4-4 means you think ISU goes 4-3 regular season and loses first round of the conference tournament to a team you don't even know yet.

                  Isu...

                  First of all Cy, I never said you were on here to bash UNI. I also said Iowa has the best RPI chance as of today. I also said ISU was on an upswing, BUT they were still below .500 in the Big 12. I do think they are weak. I think they have a couple of teams that are strong at the top, but I think overall, they are weaker than they have been in the recent past.

                    I know you didn't say I was here to bash UNI I just wanted to make that clear.

                    I don't see how you can use the RPI when you want to in order to rank Iowa, UNI and ISU. But then don't use it to rank conferences. If the Big 12 only has a couple of strong teams and is listed 3rd then what does that say about the Valley being 7th? I would say the Big 12 and the Valley are both strong conferences.

                    I think there is a ton of parity in college sports these days so you aren't going to see really stand-out conferences like in the past, but that doesn't mean you should mistake parity for weakness.

                      Yeah...

                      I suppose I'd have to agree with you on the Big 12 being a little weaker than the last couple years but that's because when you're at the very top, there's nowhere to go but down. Obviously, KU and Okie St. are the cream of the crop this year, but the rest of the teams (besides Baylor) are pretty tough as well. I think that the 3-5 teams have dropped slightly this year but the 9-12 teams have gone up, making the conference tougher, top to bottom. Take Colorado/ISU's recent wins for example...

                      Note: I also think the MVC is a tough conference to play in as well and no, I haven't forgot that you guys killed us earlier this year

                        congratulations

                        Steve Deace read a large amount of emails yesterday on his show and there were three emails regaurding Panther basketball, their team, their ESPN 2 appearances and how we would like more exposure. Keep it up, maybe one day we will even find him on our board, let me know if you would like that and I will personally invite him.

                          [email protected]

                          Well, for those that have some free time and live in the KXNO brodacast area (or those anywhere else in PantherNation) who want to send a quick e-mail to Mr. Deace, here's his address.

                          I think respectful e-mails about the amount of support that exists in central Iowa for UNI sports should be the order of the day. He usually responds best to e-mails that are well thought out and respectful. I should know, it seems he will always read mine when I've put some thought behind them and ignores the w-mails that are written with only passion to back them up. My most important message will be to mention the Bracket Buster game next Saturday in the Dome at 3:00 PM vs. Western Michigan.

                          Let the e-mail party begin. I've sent one and I will send another soon. Thanks to all Panther fans who are continuiing to try and advance Panther Nation to another level. Go PANTHERS!!!!

                            Can someone get Gary Rima's phone number or email address? I want to send it to Larry Cotlar and Steve Deace and have them get him on the show talking about Panther Athletics. Especially the ESPN broadcast coming up. What a better representitive for Panther Athletics on the radio than Gary Rima, oh baby!

                              Jeg....Gary lives in Oelwein and his home number is 319-283-3994. He used to have a UNI and hotmail email address, but I think he no longer uses them. You could try them though: [email protected] or [email protected]

                              If that doesn't work, let me know and I'll get his new email address when I see him Saturday. He has been on the local sports show quite a bit...I think it's the Front Row with Dallas Kincaid on KCNZ.
