  • Next Up: Michigan State or Maryland

Ok, sorry for starting this thread during the period of celebration. Long time lurker here but I believe this team has the ability to go all the way and I'm as excited as hell. (Spent the last few hours making basketball cookies for about twenty of my coworkers due to the team's victory (well actually encouraged my wife to do it but...) - how I got talked into that I don't know).

Anyway, digging for info on both Michigan State and Maryland to try to determine which to cheer for tomorrow. It sounds like Michigan State has a couple guys banged up (one with an arch issue that can't simply be wrapped) and another with a minor sprang. Maryland has a pressure capable defense.

Digging for more info. One thing I've found so far that you may be interested in is a thread from a Michigan State message board about our game. Pretty entertaining: http://www.spartantailgate.com/forum...hern-iowa.html

Anyway, looking for insight from everyone on who we may want to face, matchups, play styles, and so on.

Whoever we play, it will be our third consecutive game against programs that have won national titles in the last 20 years. And all of the coaches are future hall of famers.

Re: Next Up: Michigan State or Maryland

Obviously some teams like UNI have had difficulty getting the "BCS" type conferences to schedule home and home games. Some may recall that it was Maryland coach Gary Williams who belittled the MVC a few years ago claiming that he hadn't received calls asking for such matchups. As he obviously didn't follow through on his word we might finally get a chance for at least a neutral court game!

Found this from a few years back on Gregg Doyel's blogg located here: http://www.cbssports.com/columns/weblogs/entry/9275443

Gary Williams talks tough. Soon, we'll find out if he is tough.

Williams, Maryland's wonderful if occasionally condescending coach, suggested to the Washington Post on Sunday that teams from the Missouri Valley Conference -- whose hopes for a record five NCAA Tournament bids would come at the expense of larger leagues -- have been ducking schools like Maryland.

"They haven't been banging down anyone's door in the ACC to play," Williams told the Post. "The phone works both ways, last time I checked."

Yes, it does. And sources in the Valley tell me that by the end of this week, Williams will have received calls -- and offers to play a home-and-home series beginning next season -- from every team in the Missouri Valley.

      Don't you love that?

Missouri State coach Barry Hinson was so excited by Williams' apparent offer that he had his scheduling director call the Maryland basketball offices first thing Monday morning to schedule a home-and-home series with the Terps beginning next season. And Missouri State is willing to play the first game on the road, even if that means bailing out on a money-making home game already on the schedule for next season.

By 3 p.m., when Maryland hadn't returned the call, Hinson called Maryland himself and left the same message. As of this morning, Williams hadn't returned Hinson's call. He also hasn't yet returned a message left this morning by CBS SportsLine.com to discuss the issue further.

In Williams' defense, he's preparing for this little thing called the ACC tournament. He has a lot on his mind.

But if he's going to talk tough when the Washington Post calls, he better be prepared to back it up when Missouri State and Northern Iowa call.

For ease of reference, popular message board locations for each school:

        Michigan State - http://www.spartantailgate.com/forum...message-board/

        Maryland - http://www.insidemdsports.com/forums...isplay.php?f=3

A quick scan provides a lot of bulletin board material. Seems that the vast majority of fans of each school believe their game tomorrow is for the "Elite Eight"

Also, nice writeup previewing tomorrow's game here: http://www.insidemdsports.com/index....ball&Itemid=85

I must be stupid.... Does this mean they are claiming that they are easily better than KU...?

Also... Don't you think after taking down KU, they would show atleast a little bit of worrying about playing us?

Yep. I'm sure we'll see a lot of talking heads with the same opinion. The idea that this was a fluke - that UNI can't play that well again that soon and/or that KU played poorly (and of course their team won't). Then again you'll also see a few comments from a small minority (probably those not having consumed their fifth or sixth beer) that are worried about facing UNI's defense.

I suppose if I were in their shoes, not having seen UNI play this year, I'd probably want to play UNI rather than Kansas as well. It's just the complete lack of respect some of their posters have for UNI that provide the good bulletin board material.

              fans are dumb.

any coach worth his salt shouldn't let his team overlook UNI. (though we can always hope)
however, if the Panthers are on their game, I think they are good enough to beat any team without relying on having been overlooked.

              So bring 'em on!

As a Shocker Fan, I would love for you guys to get Gary Williams. I still remember him trashing the MVC in '06. Most of the MVC coaches from back then are gone, but it'd still be nice for you guys to beat him. 1st the trash-talking UNLV fans, 2nd KU, who most shocker fans can't stand, #1 overall, storied history, 3rd Gary Williams who refuses to give mid-majors respect. Sounds good to me. Shock The World, again!!!

THIS is the reason I want to play Maryland next week. I'm glad someone else was able to find that Doyel article. I'm sure it wasn't big news anywhere else in the country, but other than tournaments, how many ACC teams have played home and home games with Valley teams? Evansville went to UNC last season, SIU won at Virginia Tech a couple years ago too (then again in the NCAA's to prove the point). Any others?

Personally, I think Maryland is a little bit of a better match-up for us, so I guess I am pulling for them today.

I hapen to believe this also - but I am not exactly up to date on this. I just got the impression that they rely very much on Vasquez, their PG. We have good luck stuffing PGs of late.

If a team generally relies on one player a bunch, we usually win those games. We usually shut those guys down.
