  • Last years pre-season rankings

I was looking at this pre-season ranking from last year, http://espn.go.com/ncb/rankings/index.html. UNI was fresh off a trip to the big dance and didn't get any love. What would it take for UNI to get some love from the pollsters? 3 trips to the dance in a row, Sweet 16, Elite 8?

It would take UNI beating Duke, UNC, Kentucky, and Notre Dame to get any love from ESPN thats for sure. My favorite part about it is that Iowa is ranked 10th on that poll, good call on that one.

I'm usually the first to bash ESPN and other so called "experts" for ignoring UNI and other outstanding mid-majors, but come on even I would'nt have put UNI very high going into last year. We lost 2 of our 3 leading scorers, and they were a major percentage of our big man mins. They were replaced with a relatively unproven sophmore and a 6'6 Freshman center, all while WSU was returning their entire team from an NIT year, SIU was returning the league MVP and more from a simply insane team the year before, and Creighton was, well a team that has gone to the post season something like 8 or 9 times out of the last 10. On paper last year I would'nt have put us to high, but thanks to some astounding efforts by our young big men (newcommer of the year for Coleman and All-D team for Stout), Benny and EC being superstuds, and Mac and the tower of play cards another amazing season was turned in.

It just all goes to show that pre-season rankings make good toliet paper. In UNI's case this year the exposure is good for future recruiting, but you don't win games based on rankings.

I think I've seen Iowa 11th in this years poll.

I'm not calling ESPN out. I just don't get what they put weight on. In a lot of cases it seems to be on what you did last year. Some cases it seems to just be who you are.

I agree. Can we please quit pretending that Iowa is a worthy basketball school? PLEASE?

Who gives a crap what Iowa is ranked.

To answer the question...we'd probably have to win a first round game, maybe even make the Sweet 16. Now you do that once, get the week long "Cinderella Factor" and you're suddenly a name.

I wonder how much the Hawk fan's opinion of their bball team would change if they started to perform at the level of their football team. I wonder if the attitude towards our bball program would revert to one similar to our football team.

My bad attitude about Iowa basketball has to do with one thing and one thing only...that sorry excuse for a human being we've got running the show. When he's gone, my attitude will improve.

Who is this "we" you are referring to. I think McDermott is doing a fine job for "our" team.

When someone says "We" reed, they aren't neccesarily including you in that group. I can refer to Cubs fans, and would do so, as "we"...but that doesn't assume YOU to be a part of that group.

                        Iowa ranking

In ESPNs defense on paper Iowa should be a top 25 team no doubt, Horner, Hulaksa, Bruner, et al. are a great group of bballers. Ben played with all these guys in AAU ball prior to UNI, and in watching those games Iowa got some great players but as was stated earlier, they have one of the worst court coaches of all time. I mean seriously how else can you explain how such great athletes lose so many close games? Alford struggles his butt off on the bench and personally I believe their team loses games because of him.

Not to turn this into a Steve Alford is a horrendous coach thread, but I'll never forget his inability to figure out how one calls an inbounds play against St. Louis in the NIT. After complaining (read whinning like a spoiled little two year old) about having to play the game in St. Louis he makes a mistake unacceptable for a rec-league coach, let alone the head of a Big 10 program. Oh and no Hawk fans, you can't have our coach for anything in the world

Newsbreaker, wouldn't you be considered a bandwagon fan then? Just wondering. I mean I still support ISU football even though "we" have a guy who thinks that running a draw play with our 3rd string running back every other play is a good idea...

I would define a 'bandwagon' fan as one who doesn't know or care until there is a 'social' factor to a teams success. I am certainly NOT that.

I'll be honest, I watch each and every Iowa basketball game, however you won't see my butt in that building for a non-UNI game until that jerk is gone.

Beyond that, there is a difference between the two men in question. One is of questionable ability, the other is of questionable character. I don't like that Alford lays down for Big Ten Play, but I hate the way he conducts himself, and the actions he's taken in the past. I'm a Cubs fan for Christ's sake, you don't have to tell me about being loyal in the face of adversity and lacking wins...with the Iowa Basketball program it's very different.

They can wake me up when that turd is gone...I'd rather watch UNI basketball anyway.
