    UNI Team Demo

Coach Jake with the team ran a practice at the IBCA coach’s clinic in Urbandale this morning. Coach Jake did a wonderful job speaking with coaches and narrating the practice. Other coaches at the clinic had very high praises for Coach Jake.

The team looked really good. Starters look like it will be Kwadzo, Moran, Dunham, Koch, and O’Rear. Kwadzo will be the best point guard on the court all season long.

Rank, Sonnen, James, and Pehl I believe will give the team huge minutes. I think Sonnen and James could play close to starter minutes and could put up double-digit points any game. Rank plays well both inside and out. Rank looks like he will be able to play the 3 position behind Dunham as well. Pehl understands his role is to hustle, rebound, and shoot by the hoop.

I don’t believe we will play a team all year that will have better guards then this team. That being said the concern seems to be are post players experience. Jake Koch is a big guy. He can play both inside and outside. I have always compared him to his brother, but I feel like he’s more like the size and speed of a Grant Stout. We all know what we have in Lucus. I think those two will also compete against anyone. The difference now compared to when Adam Koch and Jordan Egleseder were sophomores is that we have a Chip Rank and an Austin Pehl (6’10) to back them up. Also Jake Koch was able to red shirt gaining valuable strength, experience, and no wasted year. Four years ago Morrison would have probably been getting big minutes, but I’m not sure if I see him playing with Kwadzo, Moran, Sonnen, and James in front of him. This really shows how far the program has come. Not to mention that Nathan Buss by next year will be getting big minutes.

All the players besides Pehl shot the three ball really well. If they can shoot as good as they did today, I think we’ll compete with Syracuse (zone).

Coach Jake briefly compared this team to last years team. He said you can’t replace a 7 footer in Eglesder, but this team will be able to get up and down the court more. Also he said with his pack defense that it will be easier to switch on defense with out having the risk of Eglesder getting matched up with a quicker shooter on the outside.

I am biased towards UNI, but having three key senior starters this year I wouldn’t bet against this team. I think this team will be competing for a third straight MVC title.

      Re: UNI Team Practice

I'm really getting excited for basketball season. Should be a fun year. I think that the starting lineup is fairly set with Kwadzo, Moran, Dunham, O'Rear, and J.Koch. Kerwin can cause some matchup problems with his height/length in the MVC at the 3, and you know O'Rear will never be outworked. Those two are probably the ones that are the most likely to be switched out of the starting lineup if there was to be a shakeup. Rank and Sonnen would most likely be the guys to step in to the starting lineup. Rank has a very nice outside shot, but O'Rear is better down in the post. Some people have compared J.Koch to his brother or other guys. IMO, his game is most similar to Jay Tunnell, who was a very nice player at Indiana State (maybe even more athletic than Jay...actually probably more athletic).

Here's my pre-pre-season projection of minutes/game for this year's team.
      Kwadzo (29)
      Moran (26)
      Dunham (25)
      Koch (25)
      O'Rear (20)
      Rank (19)
      Sonnen (19)
      James (18)
      Pehl (10)
      Morrison (9)
      Lange (2)
      Ray (1)

That's based on 2-3 OT's this year. The nice thing about this now is that UNI would still return 7 guys who would have averaged 9+ minutes/game heading into 2011-12. In addition, Nate Buss would come off a RS year, and Deion Mitchell should be ready to step into a top PG role, and Marvin Singleton should be strong enough to play a similar role of Lucas. Anyway, Jake has developed a great system, and a deep team that knows their respective roles.

UNIHoops- Was that your own assessment from the IBCA or something you found online?
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.

He can't stay healthy? He had a couple of somewhat minor injuries last year. And he played every game and stayed completely healthy for his entire true freshman season, in '08-'09.

Can't wait for the season to start. But I'm trying to stay cautiously optimistic about this year.

We have some major holes to fill from last year. We lost some really great talent and size.

If Lucas stays out of foul trouble I see him playing more like 24-25 minutes a game, of course this all depends on how Rank and Pehl develop throughout the season. I also think in a perfect world Morrison gets a few more minutes to take some stress off of the starting back court. The nice part about coach Jake is that he has shown no one has to play a certain amount of minutes he goes with who is playing the best and who is the most effective against the competition.

Also I know your comment about Jake Koch is meant to be a compliment, but I think when people compare Jake to his brother or Grant Stout they are just comparing him to great players at UNI who people can easily relate too, and who are better than Tunnell. Which is not a bad thing. I do see and agree with your comparison and I think Jake is probably more athletic that Tunnell. Can't go wrong with a 6'9" 255 pound player who can stretch a defense.

How come no audio on the video? Couldn't they get a broadcast major? What about the "Boom goes the dynamite" guy? He needs another chance.

My own. And like I said above I'm biased towards UNI, so I'm seeing more positives than probably negatives. Can't wait for the season to start!

                        UNIhoops-

I was just asking, b/c I was a little confused by your opening line in the post "UNI Team Demo". It was almost as if it was an article somewhere that had a title! Not a big deal, just was curious if there was more comments from others regarding their experience at the IBCA clinic. Thanks for the post.

Coach Nett tweeted some pics. The first thing that caught my eye was Urbandales' Jayhawk logo (http://twitpic.com/328tmb). Had a nice chuckle and see it as some good charma for the start of the season.

Name one player...in all of the NCAA...who plays more than 4 minutes a game that doesn't play through nagging injuries.
