  • 2011 Missouri Valley-Mountain West Challenge

3rd annual Missouri Valley-Mountain West Challenge is under way! Both conferences have a win in the challenge.
*Drake lost at Boise State 108-64 tonight but that is NOT part of the challenge.

    The MWC-MVC schedule:

#22 Creighton wins at San Diego State 85-83

    Northern Iowa 83-Colorado State 77

    Drake 62- Air Force 60

    TCU 70-Evansville 68

    Boise State 74-Indiana State 65

    New Mexico 76-Missouri State 60

    Wyoming 66-Bradley 49

    Wichita State 89-#20 UNLV 70

Each conference had 4 wins. I don't know of a tie-breaker, I think this just ends in a tie?

Hey I ended up doing it at the Creighton-Iowa game in Des Moines...well kind of, I did it quietly b/c I couldn't bring myself to say "Go Creighton" out loud. I just said go Valley

Surprise surprise, Doug McDermott leads all scorers with 23. Tie ball game 62-62 with 7:30 to go. This would be a big road win for the MVC.

Creighton 76-SDSU 72 with 2:15 to play. SDSU lead this by 17 points at one point.

WSU-UNLV and MoSt-New Mexico could be some very interesting games. Those 2 MWC teams are traditionally very solid and should be decent measuring sticks to see where the shox and bears are at

Missouri State (4-1) just lost to Oral Roberts (5-2) last night 68-63. I don't see Mo State winning in The Pit at New Mexico.

They really should have had #22 Creighton (6-0) play #20 UNLV (8-0). But UNLV had to have 2 OT's to win at UC Santa Barbara 94-88 last night so UNLV could have a tough time at Wichita, a consistently tough arena to play in.

These are huge games for the Valley. Great win for the conference last night for Creighton. UNLV just beat North Carolina so that would be a great win for WSU. Missouri State lost at Oral Roberts last night, so they could use a bounce back game.

I think it's big that it's a home game for the Shockers. Koch Arena is a tough place to go into and get a win. I can see UNLV losing in Wichita. I just don't see Mo State winning at new mexico in The Pit after losing to Oral Robert, but yes would be a great bounce back and big win for the MVC

I can always see Steve Alford losing and I usually hope for it when I have the misfortune of him crossing my mind. Never cared for that guy, just seemed like an all-around jerk. A jerk who wins, but a jerk nonetheless

How do they match these teams up? Is it based on conference finish the previous year? Also, how do they pick which MVC team didn't play last year (Missouri State)?

Here's an old Northern Iowan article from 2008 that has a lot of info I hear the guy that wrote it is really awesome

Not every Missouri Valley team will be able to participate every year. There are nine teams in the Mountain West and ten in the Missouri Valley. The Valley team that finishes 10th the year before will have to miss the challenge. But the same team can't miss the challenge twice. According to Dannen if the same team finishes tenth in the Valley back-to-back years, the ninth place team will have to sit out that second year, to allow the 10th place team to participate.

No real word on HOW they reach the matchups, might have a lot to do with scheduling and logistics as well as last years record? But I'm only speculating.

I would really like to see UNI get another matchup versus the RRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEBBBBBBBBBBBBEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLL LLLLLLSSSSSSSSS

I really enjoyed playing them in the tourney, well I liked shutting up their fans.

You never know...one more year for the series. I wouldn't be surprised. UNI hasn't played UNLV and they will be at home next year, with UNI being a road team (Creighton is at home, Wichita is on the road---but playing UNLV this year, and Indiana State will be at home). I think there is a good chance UNI is in Vegas next year for this game.
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.
