  • Couple observations on Iowa game

    1. Iowa outscored us by 36 points on two point baskets. That concerns me a great deal. We shot out of our heads, and 20% above our average, on both free throws and three pointers. If we shot our averages, and if not for the technicals, it would have been a very close game, we maybe even lose.

    2. No TV for the game for us non-mediacom fans, so I could only go by Gary's call. Seems that Iowa definitely earned their technical fouls, so any complaints about that are stupid. Having said that, it does seem that UNI benifited overall from the officiating. If that's the case it's a great sign. Perhaps we have finally reached the point where refs respect UNI enough that we get some homer calls on our home court. Lord knows we have been the victims of homer calls on many other courts, certainly CHA, over the years. We have even gotten the worst of the officiating many times on our home court in the past. What UNI has always tried to do is make adjustments and play above the officiating. What Iowa does apparently is have a total meltdown.

Fran was on the edge all night and the refs had enough. Then he went further. It was Higgins, so I don't blame him but still. The rossin hit a kid after Fran slapped it away.

Though UNI didn't get many 2 pt buckets they seemed to have control of the game

Why do people hate Higgins? Nobody does a better, more consistent job...

So you didn't watch the game, but figure we benefitted from the officiating?

Hope the kid can find a lawyer not trained in Iowa City, would be worth it to put some restraints on the psycho coach.

Fran was on Higgins when he had 10-0 lead. Higgins told him then to 'shut-up' just 4 minutes into the game. Fran got everything he deserved....asst. coach did, too. Such an embarrassment....WOW! (we sit behind visitors' bench - heard it all..)

Yes. Do you have a problem with that? I listened to the game, and I've seen enough games to know when there is as big of disparity in the foul shots (discounting the technical fouls) as there was in that game, the officiating is probably not totally evenhanded. It's a statistical thing.

Officials are human, maybe they were tired by all the stupid antics of the Iowa coaches and it influenced their calling of the game. Maybe, as I stated, we've gotten to the point as a program where we get some of the benefit of the doubt with officials and receive some homer calls. Again, as I said, that would be a good thing in my mind. I can't count all the times when we've been playing a "big time" team and they got a lot of favorable calls. Now we are the big time team. In a perfect world that would not happen at all, but since it does I'd love it to be in our favor on our floor at least.

watching the game really would have changed your opinion about a lot of things. this isn't usually true with our brand of basketball but this is one of the rare nights where you really had to be there to get the full impression of what went on. even then, it was bizarre

I'd love to see your statistical analysis regarding foul shots.

achrist...maybe you are right...maybe higgins does like us now

and as for getting homer calls...i think it comes with being successful too...SIU would get a ton of homer calls with thier good teams a few years back. Insane amounts even with their up-in-your-face defense that easily every play probably could have been a foul. I think we have reached that point along with our overall talent and discipline has increased.

Re: Couple observations on Iowa game

Let's get past the officiating, panther fans are no more objective about it than hawkeye fans it seems.

Does it concern anyone else that we got outscored by 36 freaking points from inside the arc? We've never been a good 3 point shooting team, anecdotal evidence to the contrary, and I hate seeing us rely so heavily on it. The fact that it worked out for us in one game, along with close to a record number of points from the stripe, does not change that fact. Missing a ton of short jumpers and layups will not work out for us very often.

                            Silent,

This was not a Mediacom game. Panther Sports Network originated it. It cleared on KWWL Channel 7 in Eastern Iowa, WOI Channel 5 in Central Iowa and on a Sioux City station for Western Iowa. Where do you live? Too bad you couldn't see it as most of the state was covered.

It was not on WOI 5 in central Iowa, this is what I was led to believe, so I planned to watched the game at home and arrived home just before tipoff. It was on channel 5.2, which only Mediacom subscribers get.
