  • The "I/We" Philosophy of Ben Jacobson

    From the story:

"In his postgame press conference, he said the word "we" 38 times. The word "I" came out 22 times.

To break it down further, the "we" mentions were mostly along these lines:

"We battled hard to grab ahold of the momentum ..."

"We got off to a good start ..."

"We scored and had the momentum to begin the basketball game."

"We have had a lot of good things happen at Northern Iowa in our men's basketball program ..."

It was almost all positive. The "I" mentions explained more about where it all went wrong.

"I needed to get us adjusted ..."

"I needed to get us switched into something that would attack a little more ..."

"I just needed to help our guys a little bit more."

"I needed to do that sooner.'"
    "Well, that escalated quickly."

If you want guys to run through walls for you, this is the approach to take. Applies to sports and in the business world too...

If computers ruled college basketball the way they do football, we'd have skipped all this March Madness monotony and just waited a month for the Kansas-Kentucky title game. And watched Northern Iowa play Cornell in the Poulan Weedeater Bowl. ~ Dwight Perry The Seattle Times

Nobody I'd rather have as coach of this program...class act and great motivator and teacher. Hope he's here for many, many years.

I just read this quote today in an article about coaching weighlifters...reminded me of a different coach. Made me laugh at least...

"If you try to coach people by using abuse and insults, you’re a loser. You should get out of coaching because you’re a disgrace to the profession. Go get a job doing something more suited to your personality, like jumping in a lake with a big rock tied to your neck."

Re: The "I/We" Philosophy of Ben Jacobson

One of my old bosses used to call me into his office to assign me some project that had come up and always say "We need to do this right away, and when I say we, I don't mean me".

That probably doesn't fit in this model, but it always made me laugh and I liked him and vice versa.

He did this after the Michigan State game as well. Classiest coach in basketball.

I've noticed this in the past as well. If anything goes well, it's "we". If it goes bad, he takes the blame. Classy guy!

Bear Bryant always used to do that too. If they lost it was his fault. If they won, the team won.

I think Jake is a breath of fresh air. Rarely do you see him berating players and officials. You don't see him getting into feuds with other coaches. He doesn't act like basketball is the most important thing in the world. Not to say he doesn't have passion or intensity but he doesn't lose control.

He said in the post game when he did take that timeout in the 2nd half and really got at the guys, it was because he wanted it for them so much.
"...the Northern Iowa men's basketball team reached the ultimate highs before hitting a devastating low. Unexpected success, followed by unimaginable failure. And they owned it -- all of it -- for the world to see. Like men. Like leaders. Like champions -- in a way no tournament bracket could ever define."

And to be honest, our play right before the timeout, even though I think we scored, we looked like we didn't even know what the sets were supposed to be. It wasn't about making a basket, but sticking to the plan and executing well.
