  • Dan Muller (ISUr HC) a serious candidate for Dayton job

So says Jeff Goodman of ESPN. https://twitter.com/GoodmanESPN/stat...87525966139392

If WSU leaves in time for next season and this goes through, UNI could find themselves as MVC favorites purely because there is no other school competent enough to take first place away from us. And Dayton would be a hell of a job to turn down. Constant sold out crowds, better conference, private, easier recruiting, pay that would be at least double what he's making now.

If he were offered the job the only reason I see that he stays is that he is an ISU alum.

That'd be an absolutely terrible hire for Dayton, but if he gets the offer he's gone.

If Wichita is gone for next year, Missouri State is going to be the preseason favorite. We'll all point and laugh, but that's who it will be. Paul Lusk is the Valley's version of Roy Williams. Nobody in the league does less with more...

Personally I think Dayton can set their sights higher than Muller. He's never even taken ISU to the NCAA tournament, although the argument can be made they should have made it this season.

Anthony Grant got the job. Guess we still have ol' Dan to kick around...

I kind of wondered how serious this was, I know that there was probably a phone call, but Jeff Goodman isn't always the best source of insider information

I've been scratching my head over this comment for the past few days. I'll probably still be wondering what this means as we watch Roy coach in a second NC game in as many years.

Look at the talent Roy has had over his career. It's pathetic that he's only won two national titles. This year is probably his best coaching job, he's *only* got two first round picks this year, usually takes him 4+ to get to the Final Four.

I mean maybe but he has been to like 9 final fours so this may be a stretch.

But Muller would have been a bad hire though.

I'd take Roy Williams as coach of my team any day. Fantastic recruiter, always has his teams in national championship contention. I like the fact that he tries to schedule away games near the hometowns of his players. Seems like a genuinely good guy. I'm not a UNC fan, but I certainly respect Roy as a coach and a human being. Can't say that for many coaches today.

Plus with Roy Williams you don't have to go to class. They make them up for you.

THANK YOU! Must be pretty nice to recruit NBA-caliber "student-athletes" when you don't have to worry about them fulfilling the "student" part.

It's not a stretch if you aren't over thinking it.

The same is absolutely true for Calipari at Kentucky. Yes, he wins during the regular season a ton. He wins awards non stop. He throws players in the NBA better than anyone in history, and has going back to his days at UMASS from the last 80s-1996. He's 652-191 as a head coach - that's a 77% win rate. He's 249-53 at Kentucky (85%) Hell, he's had 31 NBA players from his years at Kentucky alone (something like 45 or 46 total) and 28 of those have been first round draft picks. With all of that he still has just 1 title. He's had more final fours vacated due to cheating than he has titles. He had a team with 4 lottery picks just 2 years ago and still didn't win the title. Yes, that shows what kind of crap shoot the tournament can be, but it also shows something else when it comes to a coach being able to get a team to seal the deal - especially at that level.

He's coached 25 seasons, is widely considered the best recruiter there is, and he has just 4 official final four appearances. Just 1 NCAA title. He's been to the S16 in less than half the seasons he's coached. Want to know what coaches, and programs, have as many/more official as Calipari? Jim Calhoun at UCONN (another coach that fits in the same description as Cal/Roy), BBilly Donovan at Florida (who knows how many he'd have had he not left the college game), Jim Boeheim (also fits this discussion), Guy Lewis and Houston, Lute Olson has more official final fours tahn Cal.

Look at the draft picks those two should have this year - Cal is projected to have 2 in the top 10 and another in the first round. Roy is also projected to have 3.

BC is right, for the level of monetary backing that Roy (and Cal) get, for the level of recruits they get, for the level of praise they get, to have 3 combined NCAA titles is "embarrassing". From a small program perspective would we take them as a coach? Sure. Would we take that level of success? He'll, we'd take half of it. However, when put into the true perspective of rating their seasons in contrast to where they belong, and not from a mid-major perspective, BC nailed it.

I think we may have to respectfully agree to disagree. Roy is one of the all-timers and I have a lot of respect for him and what he's done to rebuild Carolina after the Doherty disaster and continuing the success that Larry Brown had at KU. Yes, he gets good recruits but there's a reason he is able to get those recruits. Not anybody can be successful at those blue bloods (see: Crean, Tom for a recent example).

If UNC wins tonight this is the list of coaches who have won more national championships than Roy Williams:

                              Wooden
                              Krzyzewski
                              Rupp

Even if he doesn't win tonight, this is the list of coaches who have won more championships than him:

                              Wooden
                              Krzyzewski
                              Rupp
                              Knight
                              Calhoun

Yeah, he should be "embarrassed". Whatever.
