UNI also made the ESPN's Page2 Daily Quickie... with mentions of the game tonight and the basketball team... even though the author said NIU... i hate that...

"Between NIU's football team and their upstart hoops team (March bracket first-round upset special!), the Panthers are the hottest mid-major athletic program of 2005-06."

dosn't Espn usually have a mid-major poll, all i could find was their power 16 and bottom 10 poll. And i do get a kick out of their bottom 10 poll, it makes me laugh, they had texas at 10 in that poll. They always seem to throw a good team who had a tough loss into the poll and it's always interesting.

Here's the link to your weekly mid-major poll.

I'm going to start calling Southern Cal. "SCU". Then I can be as dumb as these media guys...

what bugs me is when people refer to UNI as being from Cedar Rapids. gah!
I saw it mentioned thus during the NCAA MBB tourney coverage a couple years ago, AND in the Pavillion in chattanooga, the radio snippet that played again and again said "whether you're from Boone [ASU] or Cedar Rapids...."

            highly annoying.

I always hated the mid-major label. What is a mid-major? I know Gonzaga has always been considered one, but I guess they are just a "major" now. If you win, do you lose the label?

I think "technically" a mid-major league is a one-bid NCAA Tournament league. We're not, according to that definition, a 'mid-major' anymore. We're not a 'major' yet either. We're stuck in the middle...uh, with you.

Really, I think any non-BCS school is probably going to have to live with the 'mid-major' label until they become a perennial top-25 team (ie, Gonzaga).

By the way, speaking to overall programs, we should be the #1 midmajor by a large margin right now.

Along the mid-major topic, is anyone else sick of the love for Gonzaga and Bucknell?

I'm sorry but Gonzaga is a great team in their conference but put them in the B10 or elsewhere and they are middle of the pack. Morrison looks like a stud but if he has an off night, which is very possible, see ya later Zags. Look at UNI, Crawford and Coleman (and to some extent BJ) didnt exacltly have stellar nights and yet they still beat LSU on the road.

And this Bucknell crap just sickens me. It's not even anything I have against Bucknell, its ESPN. They "invent" news by making Bucknell into the darlings of the NCAAs. I'd love to play these guys and beat 'em down just to shut ESPN up.

I'd like to see zaga play in the MVC. As to Bucknell, win a couple in the dance and they don't forget it. Knocking off a traditional power like Kansas helps too. Maybe this is our year to be the team everyone is talking about.
If computers ruled college basketball the way they do football, we'd have skipped all this March Madness monotony and just waited a month for the Kansas-Kentucky title game. And watched Northern Iowa play Cornell in the Poulan Weedeater Bowl. ~ Dwight Perry The Seattle Times

We may get the chance....isn't Bucknell a traveling team for the Bracket Buster game?

I'll defend the Zags because I watched the whole MSU game (the greatest non-dance game ever in my opinion) and several others and they would be top of the pack in virtually in conference. Just look at their non-con schedule, its absolutely brutal. They had a heck of a time getting respect at first (they were a 12 seed the year after their first run) and for awhile could'nt get good non-con games. They've earned everything they've gotten in my opinion, although ESPN as usual has gone a little too far, but thats just what they do.

Bucknell on the other hand is a bunch of BS. I could never figure out why they are so much better then UNI until I discovered this.

Distance from Lewisburg to Bristol: 262.73 miles
Distance for Cedar Falls to Bristol: 1172.34 miles
There you have it sports fans. Boy I hope we get to pound them in the bracket buster

My only point about the zags is that they don't play in a very strong conference. The valley is a four or five team race each year now. You are right that they would be a top school in almost every conference.
