  • Forget Vitale, we're getting Whelliston!

Kyle Whelliston, regular contributor to ESPN.com and founder of midmajority.com, signed-off from his weekly ESPN chat "See you next week from Cedar Falls!"

For those that don't know, Mr. Whelliston is often considered mid-major's Guru (much the same that Digger would be considered a ND guru).

This isn't unexpected since the UNI-Bucknell matchup is billed as Bracketbuster's headliner, but just another opportunity for the campus, the fans, and the team to show off their good stuff to press people that actually matter. (Forget Gameday, those guys are lost in the big conferences.)

Also, ESPN lovers may want to drop by Kyle's weekly chat next Friday 1pm ET to help him hype the big game! http://sports.espn.go.com/chat/sportsnation/index

This has been a guy, along with Ken Pomeroy, who has been on the Missouri Valley Conference's bandwagon even before this season. If you have a chance, thank him for his support.
"Lot of people talked about Ohio State or Georgetown or Michigan State or whoever, [or] Maryland in our bracket. When the brackets came out, the first team I looked at was Northern Iowa," Kansas Coach Bill Self.

For those of you who havent been around PN much, check out Whelliston's site www.midmajority.com its a great site devoted only to Mid-Major hoops. This guy has great commentary in every on of his writing pieces this year and he does his homework. He took a tour of the valley earlier this season, and had a great write up and some fun photos. Although he did miss out on the UNI game that week, Im glad to hear he gets to come watch the Panthers in action. GO PANTHERS!!!

          Vitale Love

Last night during the Gonzaga - Stanford broadcast on ESPN, shortly after UNI lost to MSU, ESPN showed a graphic of home winning streaks that were recently broken. That got Vitale talking about Southern Illinois and ultimately the MVC.

He then said something very close to to the following..."Northern Iowa is in 1st place in the MVC. Northern Iowa is a tremendous team!!" And then he moved on. Looks like he's climbing on the bandwagon.
Winning is more fun than losing.

I think I talked my youngest brother (HUGE basketball fan, a tremendous player in his own right) into coming with us. He has no love for UNI basketball, and has been very reluctant to give us any credit thus far. I asked him if he wanted to go, and he was very excited, talking about how UNI is really a dangerous out in March.

The last UNI basketball game he went to with me was vs Creighton in the Weaver years. We won, but there couldn't have been 2000 people there. He isn't going to believe the difference.

We won't know the real benefits in terms of fan growth from this year for some time, but it's been remarkable thus far. Win a game or two in the big tournament, and it truly will become a new day.
