  • The Positives

I waited to check here for fear of another total meltdown or near meltdown as we came near to after Saturday. Pleased to see that that has not happened and instead there seem to be people voicing legitimate concerns. (No one has blamed the band yet, that I have seen )

I thought it might be better to sit and look at the positives of the situation we are currently in.

#1- We are 21-6 with some strong wins and still looking at a probable at-large bid to the dance. We don't go from a possible 4/5 seed to out with two losses. (4 more and yes, because then we won't deserve it)

#2- The pressure is now OFF. We most likely don't have to worry about arguing whether BJ or Stout should be POY, should Mac be COY, how can we win the title outright, will we get back in the rankings, etc, etc

#3- Without those pressures the team can get back to doing what it has to-focus on what it takes to win the next game and that alone. I know they play lip service to that cliche, but it had to be tempting to look ahead and at the out of town scores and play if this happens, and this....

#4- We could get a blessing by slipping to a 3/4 seed for StL. That would most likely mean avoiding Drake in our first game and even possible Creighton in the semis. Those are the two teams most likely to put the greatest pressure on our thin bench and would have been a real burden to have to play back to back nights and then go a third night.

#5- Maybe some of the shine on Mac's resume will come off and cause schools doing some looking to refocus. (BTW I have always held that Mac will be back next year because of the new arena, recruits, etc. Remember, the pay raise he got last year he also insisted that the money be spread around to his assts, he isn't about the $$, yet)

#6- Every team has a slump at some point in the season, we have avoided one so far. As long as we can get refocused, and I trust what Mac can do this will be only a small bump that we can move on. We have not played well two straight games, yet still have had chances to win or tie at the end, just got to get over that hump.

Those are what I have come up with so far, I'm sure others will be able to add more.

We are 21-6, our RPI will still be in the 20's, we have three more regular season games against teams that can help our RPI and our tourney. Now is the time to rally and pick up these guys. I sure hope to see and hear as many of you as we can pack into the Dome on Saturday. Let's blow the roof off and knock out ESPN's satelites!

    Well stated.
The wheels aren't off the bus.

They'll be alright as long as they just bear down and get after things.
No reason to pout or get upset now. The loss is over. The pressure is off. Let's get back to kicking somebody's ass!!

Things going forward, to be taken in steps (after we obviously examine what we're doing, what's not working, and what we need to do going forward):

1)Refocus on what we can still accomplish, without any help. That includes a HUGE game on National TV on Saturday. Beat a suddenly "better then us" Bucknell team and the ship is pointed right back in the correct direction.

2)Finish strong in league. Beat Bradley and SIU, and these last two losses mean right next to nothing. RPI will go back up a little, and we'll feel very good going into the Conference Tournament.

3)Find a way to win in STL. Fatigue is obviously an issue right now, so winning 3 in 3 days will be a TALL task, but if we can play into the title game (assuming we win the next 3) and we'll still be a 6 or 7.

***Less then the above will mean a lower seed. Lose 2 of 3 and no games in STL and we'll all be rightfully nervous on Selection Sunday, IMHO.

Remember, get past STL and we get almost 2 weeks off before the big dance. That's PLENTY of time to get some juice in the legs to win the games that we'll really remember.

First things first...some intense film study, some hard decisions by the coaching staff, and a HUGE CROWD on Saturday to show the best team in school history that we're right here behind them!

Ben, Grant, and EColeman all scored above their averages tonight.

Even playing poorly most of the game the guys still had chances to win.

Of all the close calls this team has had and come out on top, its tough to lose them, but sometimes thing fall the wrong way.

Now we get two huge home games.

My wife called me tonight when I was driving to my hotel to tell me the score. Not a good thing to hear when driving in rush hour traffic in LA. After some time to reflect, it's incredible to think that this is our first multi-game losing streak this season. Never thought I'd be saying that as a Panther fan. I think the kids will be fine and hopefully have a little time to rest up before Bucknell comes calling.

How many teams outside of the Top 10 in the country can say they hadn't lost back-2-back games until February 14th??? Not many at all. UNI is still having a special season and these guys deserve our support. Come on Panther fans!!! Let's get to the Dome Saturday and show them that they have a great fan base and we're still marching towards the Dance!

My take on all this ...

First of all, I was in the barber chair on Monday, knowing full well that as I walked in the door, I would be in the company of two of the most vocal Hawk fans in the Cedar Valley. They are STILL angry that UNI beat the mighty Hawks earlier in the year. (Afterall, it's the Hawks for crying out loud.) Well, I was ready. I heard one barber say that he wasn't going to watch Panther basketball anymore, since they weren't able to pull off a home victory against Missouri State. Little did I know that the second most vocal Panther fan in the Cedar Valley was in the chair next to me, and we talked up the Cats for one-half hour. The Hawk fans with the clippers couldn't get a word in edgewise. It was great.

Then, the boys lost again at ISU. Too bad, but not the end of the world. Second loss in a row for the first time this season. Tough, but not fatal. We have a great game on tap on Saturday, national exposure, excellant opponant, and two conference games left, all while tied for second in the league. Has it occured to anyone that the Panthers aren't the best team in the conference this year?

I'll take it. I'm more excited than the past several years for the conference tourney. Unless the Cats go into total meltdown, I still look for a good end to the season, a sucessfull touney in St. Louis, and a 6 to 7 seed in the Dance, higher if we pull a couple victories off in Missouri.

Let's stick with the men. I have so many positives to say about the season that I can't even begin to put them into type. I'm as strong a fan as ever, can't wait for the next game, and look forward to St. Louis. There is NOTHING wrong with the team. We just got beat, and quite frankly, I for one didn't expect them to go undefeated this year.

Please, give me some thoughts on this.

BTW ... both of us still got terrific cuts on Monday, in spite of the fact that Hawkeye basketball was not part of the conversation.

These quotes just amaze me. You obviously haven't taken the time to realize that there were infinitely more of you talking about others "melting down" than actual people "melting down".

Seriously, go back and review the threads, there were very few people THAT down on this team.

People just get on an idea and let it snowball, never actually bothering to check back to what was actually said.

2317, Exactly! Probably didn't structure my earlier post to reflect this, but that was the point of it. I can't imagine that there has ever been a Panther team to make it this far in the year without back to back losses. Panther faithful need to show up in force for Bucknell on Saturday! By the way, I wasn't kidding about getting the news of the game while in a traffic jam on LA 110. Thankfully stopped short of road rage.

One thing to consider as well is that the teams we lost to are very capable teams.

Missouri State has lost to Missouri Valley teams that aren't your grandfather's MSV teams. MSU is 10-6 against some of the best competition in college basketball this year. They have a 28-29 RPI for a reason. They are also playing inspired basketball right now. Their post season lives may depend upon it. We had a lot less to lose then they had to gain with a UNI loss to MSU on Saturday.

Indiana State's record is not indicative of the quality of that team either. Indiana State was 8-0 out of the gate this season with a win against an Indiana team that was playing extremely well at that time. They lost a player, went on a 11 game losing streak before getting their star or catalyst back. Since his return they have won all their games but those against UNI and Wichita State. I think the team we played last night had a record of 14-2 as it was constituted last night.

The Panthers need a huge crowd behind them more than ever starting Saturday. The crowd must be loud, active, and full of positive energy.
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.

We can do that PTTB! I know I'll be there trying to make some noise GO PANTHERS!!! BEAT BUCKNELL!!! This is a huge game tonight. Also, Bucknell has a conference game tonight as they try to stay undefeated in conference play. Having an extra day off might be a good thing. As they really only have two days to put in a game plan for us. I think it will be nice to play a team who doesn't know everything we run for a change. We're a tough team to prepare for in a two day period. I'm sure they have coaches working on our tape now...but they're not going to talk to their players about it until tomorrow for sure. Practice at home tomorrow, travel day and light practice in Cedar Falls Friday and then the game is early on Saturday morning. Our guys get the chance to sleep in their own beds the next three nights and have the chance to rest up before this game. I like it. GO PANTHERS!!!
