So our dear friend from Maryland has said pubicly that he'll take on Missouri State at a neutral site at any time. I wonder if Barruh Hinson (my new favorite Valley cheerleader) has been paying attention. I can see recap now:
Missouri State 54, Maryland 47
The Missouri State Bears made sure that Gary Williams was a man of his word.
Now Gary Williams has a few more words.
"If you played the kind of ugly basketball that the Bears played against us today, you'd beat Duke nine times out of ten. I'd like to see Missouri State play our style of ball, and then we'll talk."
"His style of basketball is stupid, and we didn't want to play it," responded Barry Hinson. "We forced our own style on him. We were actually kind of surprised he was willing to let us do that so easily."
MSU beat Maryland 54-47 at the Palestra in Philedelphia tonight in front of 7,047 fans. Most of them were Terps fans, but a curious hodgepodge of various Valley teams were there, also, including a modest but vocal Bears' cheering section. Missouri State held Maryland to only 32.6% shooting, and the Terps amassed a less-than-impressive 19 points in the first half.
"Every time we tried to take a shot, there was somebody with a hand right in our face," said D.J. Strawberry. "We just weren't used to that. In the ACC you get a lot more chances to shoot wide-open."
Gary Williams, of course, blamed it on fouls that weren't called.
"How else do you explain the fact that they only committed 17 fouls the whole game? Don't tell it's because they didn't foul. That's not possible."
Temple Coach John Chaney was in attendance tonight.
"I supposed this means the Big South will be getting a lot more calls from Maryland for next year's guarantee games," he said with a smile.
