  • Allen to Farley..Mac to Jake

I'm sure you Panther fans remember how you felt when TA left for KU.
I also remember going to Chatty last December to watch the Panthers in the NC game!!!
Coach Jake could do the same with the succesful foundation being laid in Cedar Falls.
I love coach MAC and wish him the best of luck but let's all remember to cheer the uniform, not the coaches or players!!!

I'm sure when Coach McD makes his first appearance in CF with Iowa State he'll be greeted with a thunderous ovation. He's a great guy, and has lifted our program to almost unthinkable heights. I wish him the best at ISU and hope he wins many BigXII titles.

One of my best friends today made this analogy.

Dan Monson to Minnesota, Mark Few promoted at Gonzaga.

I hope it works out for UNI the way it did for the 'Zags.

            Gonzo-
My guess is the deal will pay him about 650-700K per season. At UNI, he would have only made about half that much this season after getting a huge raise from private donations. My alma mater is UNI also and I will support whomever leads the Purple and Gold. However, if I get offered twice as much money to do the thing I love somewhere I know I can be successful in 2-3 years, someplace close to home, then I find it difficult to turn down such a lucrative opportunity.
It's a good thing that we're *****ing now about a head coach that's leaving after taking our Panthers to 3 straight NCAA tournaments. Mac did a lot for this university and he will be missed. But using "McTraitor" and "GM is dead to me" is WAY out of line.

I'm hoping that all negative comments towards Coach Mac are coming from people who have never had an encounter or a relationship with him. He is one of the greatest guys, we've been super lucky to have him around and I only wish the best for him and his family in the future. This needs to be repeated until some people finally get it -- he has done more for this program in such a short amount of time and has done more than anyone else has in history. He is a family man that has to put his family's needs first, as well. He wouldn't be making this move if it wasn't right for his entire family.
"...the Northern Iowa men's basketball team reached the ultimate highs before hitting a devastating low. Unexpected success, followed by unimaginable failure. And they owned it -- all of it -- for the world to see. Like men. Like leaders. Like champions -- in a way no tournament bracket could ever define."

Its not out of line. Folks, I understand that we want Panthernation to be a positive place with flowers and strawberries and cream and lots of Panther victories, but just b/c people are emotional, doesn't make it wrong to comment about it. If you want 100% positive and nobody upset, then shut down this board and go watch Pleasantville. Personally, its boring on here when everything is 100% and no controversy. It doesn't always have to be a love fest.

In all honesty, I'm not as close to as p!ssed as Gonzo and I probably will cheer for ISU more (but be more pumped for the ISU/UNI game than ever before) than I would normally... but that doesn't mean I'm going to sit here and be happy about this and say all frilly things about Mac. I do consider this a bad move on his part. Is it double the money? Yep... but we're talking like $350,000 to 700,000, not 35,000 to 70,000. 99.99% of the people on this board could live on $350,000 a year.

Look, I had no visions of Mac staying here forever, but I would have been satisfied with one more year, with a chance to see how this team responds to life after BJ, EC & J-Lit... in a NEW FACILITY THAT HE MAJORLY CONTRIBUTED TO BUILDING!!

Then move on next year for your $700,000+ contract, no qualms.

I just think the money that he got today will still be there next year. I hope he doesn't regret going to ISU... but if he wanted a challenge, I think he found one.

The analogy is a poor, TA made a move that was a major step up after winning about 8 conference championships at UNI. GM didn't win anything and is taking a step down for the first place that would pay him more.

I'll support the Panthers and whoever the new coach is. I will not support disloyal, lying, one-time coaches. He's no different than the UNI grads who are Iowa fans that everyone loves to hate so much.
Come on, we've all taken higher paid jobs. ISU is not a step down. As I saw on another thread, he'll have plenty of income to give to UNI now.

I don't know what it's like to have a wife with cancer, but the costs that aren't being covered by insurance or won't be in the future is reason enough to want to double your salary. Maybe it's this concern that was the ONLY thing that prompted the move. If it is, he's not wrong to do it.
"Lot of people talked about Ohio State or Georgetown or Michigan State or whoever, [or] Maryland in our bracket. When the brackets came out, the first team I looked at was Northern Iowa," Kansas Coach Bill Self.

I thought of that to DWadle, and there is a chance that this played into it as well. If he flat out states that this was a reason, then I guess I'll say that it makes sense. However, and I'm not trying to cheapen anything that family is going thru b/c its such an awful thing for them, but there are a lot of families out there that have to deal with this life situation that are earning FAR less than what he was making currently at UNI.

I just think we need to be careful in painting a picture like the Macs were in some dire financial state. Again, he made more money at UNI than likely 99.99% of the people on this board make right now.

Like I've said numerous times, McMoney was lucky that WE had him. It just turned out that we ended up getting a good return out of him in his short stint here. He'd still be at Noboby State U if it weren't for Hartzell being a standup guy and giving an alum a shot. Going from UNI directly to ISU is treachery, ESPECIALLY for someone that graduated from UNI. We gave the guy a shot, and he turned his back on UNI. I suggest that as many fans as possible do the same to McMoney come next winter in the Dome. I hope he gets a RUDE awakening.

I'm wondering if I should take a break from reading these posts for the next couple of days...I'm getting sick and tired of people acting like Judas Iscariot just shook hands with them. Calm down folks. The sun will rise tomorrow, the snow will melt, and life will go on.

I like the analogy that behind TA was Farley (another good coach), and also behind Mac is Jake. But, I don't agree comparing a football move from DI-AA to DI is anywhere close to basketball DI to DI. You can argue the little details, but I don't think there's a comparison between the two sports.

If you think moving up to ISU for basketball is the same as TA's move, then you're endorsing the perception that UNI and MVC basketball is significantly inferior to the Big12. And how many of us were screaming a completely different argument on Selection Sunday?

You guys act like jobs like the ISU one come open every year. This type of opportunity only comes around once or twice in a lifetime and you cannot expect someone to turn it down. Look at how long Eldon Miller was here or Johnny Orr at ISU or Tom Davis at Iowa. Getting a chance to work at a school close to home with a lot more resources (I am sorry, but we have not even half the resources as ISU) and a real chance to go deep into the NCAA tournament do not just fall out of the sky all the time. He had to take this job. I would have called him stupid had he turned it down.

Also he was not making $350,000 here next year, he was making that in 5 years from now. I don't have the exact figures on his salary, but I'd expect he is making close to 2.5 to 3 times what he was here. Be thankful we had such a great coach for 5 years to really establish this program and get it back on the map. He set a great foundation that is not going to crumble over night. Anyone who does not cheer for coach Mac when he comes back next year is either a hypocrite or does not have a competitive bone in their body because no one would turn down the opportunity that he was given.
