Fire up the commitment machine for that pipeline to Minnesota. It's a lame duck recruiting year for the Gophers...time for UNI to crank it up a notch to the north!

In all seriousness, I hate to see coaches let go. I know how much it affects their families. I know it's the nature of the business, but the public humiliation is what hurts. That's why these guys get paid the big bucks though...comes with the territory. It's just hard to tell that to Dan's three young kids.
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.

No offense, but the guy got a $1.2 million buyout for resigning (he wasn't fired, a subtle, but important note), I think he'll be just fine. I understand that it sucks to have that kind of humiliation but there are only a handful of coaches in the D-I college ranks (and virtually none in the pros) that have the luxury of unlimited job security. It comes with the territory and he knows it along with every other coach in America. Dan can take his money and sit on his butt for life and have more than I ever will by working for the rest of mine. I don't feel sorry for him one bit. Apologies, but we're talking about millions of dollars here. I think he'll find a way to comfort his kids.

He will be able to sit on his couch, no doubt leather, in the gated community called Bear Path in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. That is where the rich and famous live in Minneapolis.

All I'm saying is that kids don't care about money for the most part (especially young ones). They don't understand all of that. All they know is that daddy got fired...$1.2 million isn't in their comprehension. I understand that is part of the job...all I'm saying is that kids don't fully comprehend that.

If the kids are young enough not to understand what a million plus bucks means, they aren't old enough to worry about daddy being fired from coaching the Gophers...

I don't think that's true UNI05Alum. A million bucks plus is hard for kids to grasp in the scheme of things...money is of little importance to them at young ages. However, knowing that dad is not going to be a Gopher, or that the fans are booing your favorite person in the world, or that you have to move, or that dad is being embarrassed...those are emotions and feelings that kids understand. They are smart...they read adults well...they just don't understand that to adults' minds, money equals more responsibilities.

I think this quote from a recent article sums it up how kids that age feel:

Tony Alford's son simply wanted to know:
                "Dad, did we get fired?"
"I said yeah, son, we got fired, but we'll be all right. I said if things don't work out in Ames, I said we'll be moving into a new house someplace.
"He said can I have that big room, and I said sure, son, you can have the master bedroom.
"I told him if we're not lucky enough to stay at Iowa State, that we'd be someplace with different colors.
"He said you mean I can't be friends with Stevie and Bret and Todd and Ace anymore?
"He cried. That was tough to handle for all of us."

Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. That's the side of coaching that the average fan doesn't get to see. Losing their jobs can really tear their families apart sometimes and money isn't always a cure-all.

Any parent taking another job in another town can cause their kids undue stress. Leaving friends behind, new schools, and what not...I just don't believe that the money coaches makes eases any of the pain.

Especially assistant coaches who don't make all that much.
