UNI Coach Scores Big Bonus For NCAA Trip
    McDermott Earns $9,000 Bonus

    POSTED: 6:39 am CST March 23, 2004
    UPDATED: 6:44 am CST March 23, 2004

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Northern Iowa's trip to the NCAA tournament earned coach Greg McDermott more than $9,000.

McDermott's new contract calls for a one-month bonus for each NCAA tournament bid.

School officials said his new contract pays McDermott $108,202 per year, meaning this season's NCAA trip produced a bonus of $9,016.83.

Northern Iowa lost to Georgia Tech 65-60 in a first-round game Friday in Milwaukee.
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.

I wish Greg could get paid a bigger bonus. I hate to see what Alford gets for the job he does compared to what Greg gets.

This is what I think........if you are currently an athletic club member.....good for you......if you are not currently an athletic club member......give what you can.

One other thing that I think is great is that the program also received a pool of $5,747 to be given to the assistants. Mac's assistants have done a great job, and it's nice to see them rewarded as well for such a successful season. I think the assistants often go unnoticed in the media, but Mac is the first to give them credit for the job they do.

The best way to get Mac and his staff more money is to put people in the stands next year. We need to draw 5-6,000 a game next year. Anything less than that would be a joke.

You are right. Anything less than 5,000 next year would be a disgrace. The students will come, but the Cedar Valley has to get out more to the games. From what I understand, I have heard that the Iowa State game is now during the week while school is in session. In the past the game has been while students were gone, so hopefully there will be more of a home court advantage with our students there. I would expect about 10,000 if the weather is decent (if not more).

UNI will have Wisconsin Green Bay at home, and next year's Bracket Buster game in February at home. Iowa State will be at home. And I am sure there will be a D2 game thrown in there at home like they have had the last 2 years. I have heard UNI will be playing in an exempt tourney, but I don't know if the location has been released to my knowledge. Should be a great year! Go Panthers!

As a former student and current CF resident, I am disapointed in both the Cedar Valley and the UNI students for the support shown to UNI athletics. The students have no excuse not to attend as they are getting a free pass as part of the student activity fee. All they have to do is show up. Props go out to the Mac's maniacs as they did a great job late in the season.

I would also like to see some additional support from the Cedar Valley. UNI offers as good of a product as the other two universities without at a significant discount. I think the athletic dept has done a fantastic job with promotions and family discounts.

Giving to the athletic club is a fantastic way to help pay for continued success. You can give as little as $50 a year and be recognized in the loyalty level. Ticket discounts and club room access are available at the Purple level ($350) and above.
If computers ruled college basketball the way they do football, we'd have skipped all this March Madness monotony and just waited a month for the Kansas-Kentucky title game. And watched Northern Iowa play Cornell in the Poulan Weedeater Bowl. ~ Dwight Perry The Seattle Times
