  • Prediction for the tenor of this board btwn 1/30 & 3/11

Here is my prediction for the anarchy that will ensue on this board for the rest of the season as a byproduct of the teams' successes & failures.

Now until 6 p.m. tomorrow: Many people will have or did already cry and moan about how we are done for the season.
January 30th - Feb 12th -- This team gets hot and wins five in a row. People on this board start rekindling, downright guaranteeing conference titles. Definitely start predicting a big win at Creighton and start booking NCAA dance cards.
Feb 13th - 17th -- After a close loss @ CU people are down but still talk about how we still can take care of business over the next three games.
Feb 17th - 23rd -- Two more road losses (including the BB) and the sky will be falling on this board. "It's over" they will say. They'll start asking about how they can purchase NIT tickets and what the student ticket policy will be --- knowing full well that the ticket office wont be thinking ahead (due to their confidence in the team's chances? no, much different story. but I digress...).
Feb 24th -- A dominating win on Senior night brings everybody back down to earth. Why?? B/c they realized that UNI just went 12-6 in the knock down drag 'em out MVC, they finished 20-9 and have a 3 seed in the MVC tourney and are one win and a semifinal loss away from likely sliding into an NCAA birth.
March 3-11 -- UNI loses a nailbiter to 2 seed Creighton in the MVCT Semis and the sane fans on this board assure everyone that things are going to be ok but the "Sky is Falling-ers" (NOTE: typically the same ones that had wild-eyed guarantees of conference titles just a couple short weeks ago) will be up in arms. Posters will come up with literally 100s of theories about if we "did enough" in the regular season. We'll have regular bubble watches and conference tourney updates proclaiming the good, bad and the ugly losses that can help or hurt UNI's chances. People will agonize. People will argue. People will develop ulcers.
SELECTION SUNDAY -- For the fourth year in a row your UNI Panthers will be selected to dance and will happily accept traveling many miles to be the underdogs as an 11-seed for America's biggest hardwood party. Back on the board elation insues, unwarranted speculation by the formerly-known as "Sky is Falling-ers" will begin about how our road to the Sweet 16 is "very doable" and "with a little luck" we can easily become "the next George Mason". A bit more sane reactions will come from folks that realize that the NCAA bid is something to cherish, regardless of outcome and that lets not get too carried away. But overall, we'll all be happy. Back-to-Back-to-Back-to-Back looks and sounds a lot cooler than the headline, "UNI to host similarly talented INSERT NAME HERE midmajor in NIT's 1st Round on Wednesday".

In SUMMARY: It's going to be a roller coaster... enjoy the ride.

    Haha well done Madcat.
"...the Northern Iowa men's basketball team reached the ultimate highs before hitting a devastating low. Unexpected success, followed by unimaginable failure. And they owned it -- all of it -- for the world to see. Like men. Like leaders. Like champions -- in a way no tournament bracket could ever define."

That was pretty funny, I'll have to admit.

That's funny Madcat! I hope you are right.
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.

You forgot "posters begin bickering and point out each other's spelling errors in a retaliation effort that rivals the completely lame."

            But other than, dead-on man!

Please let us know when the meltdown is permissible.

Personally, I think losing 5 of the last 7 - and needing to win 7 of the last 9 (or so) is a pretty good time to start having serious doubts.

On the flip side, I hope you are right MadCat - I would love nothing more than to look back and say I was wrong.

But for now, consider me partially melted.

Me too. Of course some will interpret that to be that I won't continue to give to the PSC, I won't show up for the games, I won't cheer with everything I've got. I'm very disappointed right now as I'm sure everyone is, but...

This team is going to have to gut check it for this Indiana trip. We are going to be tired by the time we hit ISU. We should win at EU but if we aren't on top of things at InSU, we could well lose that. Time to suck it up and get some of these tough wins.
If computers ruled college basketball the way they do football, we'd have skipped all this March Madness monotony and just waited a month for the Kansas-Kentucky title game. And watched Northern Iowa play Cornell in the Poulan Weedeater Bowl. ~ Dwight Perry The Seattle Times

Anyone still posting on this board, whether mentioning the NIT, saying they are disappointed in the way the team has played, or still saying we're going to win it all - we are all still the most die hard Panther fans. Otherwise we would not be posting on this board, we would not care to even talk about the Panthers.

Everyone has his or her own way of dealing with the disappointment - if we all say "Wait - we're still going to win the Valley and get an NCAA bid" think how boring it would be!

As for me, I am very disappointed - yet still hold out a tiny ray of hope for the rest of the season (though I am also very realistic that if we continue to play like we have been, we will be lucky to get more wins)

This is what being a super fan is all about!

UNIMadCat - Could you please identify the "sane" posters as opposed to those who are not. Please provide a list of them and the "sky-is-fallers" so we can yell at the "sky-is-fallers" for being angry and disapointed after a loss.

I cannot stress enough how much I appreciate your psychatric expertise.
