It's time to start the season off right with some home cooking in the McLoed and three W's in three days. I threw some random stats together to see what we are matched up against. Thoughts?

    2007 Postseason Play: None
    End of Season RPI: 86

    Northern Illinois: 06-07 record 7-23, 4-12 MAC W
    2007 Postseason Play: None
    End of Season RPI: 302

    Massachusetts: 06-07 record 24-9, 13-3 Atlantic 10
2007 Postseason Play: 2nd round of NIT
    End of Season RPI: 62

    Cal Poly: 06-07 record 19-11, 9-5 B. West
    2007 Postseason Play: None

There are a bunch of interesting story lines this weekend-

    1) Former Colorado and new NIU Coach Ricardo Patton makes his head coaching debut against UNI on Friday Night. Boy is the media going to struggle with team abbreviations in this one. Any bets on how many AP stories will come out on Saturday saying 'Patton has successful debut', even though UNI will have won by 20...

    2) Cal Poly returns a lot of players from last year's team and may be better than UMass. Let's just hope the football game gets over in a timely manner so that everybody can get to the McLeod on time...

    3) UMass has changed their style of play. They want to go up and down now and put up over 100 points in both of their exhibition games. They are coached by former Kentucky Guard Travis Ford who is bound for a job in the BCS in the near future. There is also a great name alert, they have an outstanding freshman forward named Papa Lo.

I think this is a great setup for UNI. A cupcake (NIU), a less talented but more experienced team (Cal Poly) and a team with similar talent that plays a different style (UMass).

If we come out of the weekend 3-0, I think things look pretty promising for the year...

Quick question: Is the UMass game on Mediacom in Des Moines too, or just in the Cedar Falls area?

      Any idea?

Hopefully someone in the media has remembered that little tidbit of information!!!
Nice info 2317. I thought the only noteworthy player for Missouri on that team was Anthony Peeler, but I stand corrected.

I skimmed a NIU preview in the Tribune a few days ago. They have four guys who started at least 10 games last year returning. A fifth returning starter shot 51% from three last season but is out with a shoulder injury (hope I didn't jinx Kawzdo). Even though they're coming off a poor record with a new coach, they must have some depth and experience. I'd be a little leery of declaring us 20 point winners in this game.

Since when did UMASS become a stepping stone job to the BCS?

I didn't say the UMass job was necessarily a stepping stone, but Travis Ford is VERY well thought of by a lot of people. He will have a BCS job regardless of where he is right now...

What a blast of a sports weekend Panther fans will have. 3 basketball and 1 football game within one weekend. I've been pumped for this weekend for some time now.

Here's hoping it stays postive with 4 Ws.

A lot of people thought he had a shot at the Kentucky job.

I just think you might be confusing basketball for football here. A BCS job in basketball (whatever that means) is not the Valhalla you seem to think it is. What about UMASS, Memphis, Marquette, georgetown to name a few are you saying that a job at a BCS school such as Oklahoma or north Carolina state or missouri or name your school here are better.

huh? I'm pretty sure that is incorrect.
"I think they're very good," Farley said of the preseason top 25 Hawkeyes. "But so are we."

First off- Marquette and Georgetown both play in a BCS league, so you are flat wrong there. UMass made a final 4 in 1996 and has been a middle of the pack team and has very few if any NCAA appearances since Calipari left. How many final 4's has Memphis made, even though they have great talent??

There is substantially better money in the BCS leagues. The resources and prestige is also much better...

Guess McDermott should have tried to get a job @ UMASS instead of Iowa St...much better talent, resources, facilities......
