    Re: Outlook for the season

Little too early to get ourselves concerned with Pomeroy predictions. I mean seriously, do you think that Drake is #10 in the country? Do you think Pomeroy thinks Drake is 10th in the nation? These prediction models generally don't have enough data to be very accurate until the season is near completion anyway.

It is way too early to know how good we will be. We haven't even seen all our starters play yet. I'll wait to see how we look when Jake settles on a consistent lineup and when Carlton gets back into action. If Joe Green is in fact the player some people have hyped him up to be, this will play a big factor as well.

is Green hurt at the moment or not eligible to next semester?

Joe Green??? His bio sounds like he was decent at SDSU, but what makes you think there's reason for hype? Decent at SDSU doesn't translate into Michael Jordan, or even Michael Ruffin, Ben Jacobsen,or Nate Funk.

Is he hurt, or has to sit out due to transfer?

            Very true, 2317.

I'm concerned, however, about the minutes Josten is logging. All hard minutes too, playing point, scoring, and playing D against the other teams' scoring threat. We've seen previous Panther teams wear down at the end of the year due to lack of guard depth. Assuming the Jake can fix the rebounding debacle we had against Iowa, the point guard issue is our achillies heel. If we can somehow manage our way around the above, we're in decent shape, as our young guys get more game experience.

Then, they've got 18 games to show what they're really made of. I think this team (if they play to their capabilities) can finish 11-7 in the Valley...probably tied for 4th.
The problem is, and maybe I'm generalizing here, that it doesn't seem that Coach Jake can get these boys to play consistently. I think this will kill us.

You're right, capability-wise, we're talented and could perform well, but I think we're very streaky and not necessarily in a good way.

It'll be interesting and I'll hope for the best obviously, but maybe I'm just over-exaggerating because I really thought we'd beat Iowa.

Green has to sit out the first semester as a transfer. I assume that means he will be eligible to play against Wartburg.

I saw Joe Green in HS at waverly and he was pretty good. Played alot of Point guard at 6'8" if I remember right. I don't know how much help he willbe but should be servicable for some minutes somewhere.

Couldn't have said it better myself. This team has talent right now and to say wait for people to get eligible or healthy is wishful, unrealistic thinking.

                      Re: Outlook for the season

Joe Green played, literally, all 5 positions in high school/AAU (yeah I know, HS and AAU big deal right...) But with his size and apparent ball handling skills and shooting touch he could be a matchup problem when he is on the court. And folks, we need every little advantage we can get right now. If that means a 6'8 guy helping Josten bring it up against the other team's 3/4 so be it. I've heard some talk too that he's been pretty consistent and relatively impressive compared to the play of some others.

Good news is we don't have to wait long to find how much, if any, impact he will have with this year's team.

No offense to Waverly HS, but that doesn't mean jack in the MVC, and is no reason for any hype. I saw a couple of posts stating he's an offensive force in practice...is that just wishful thinking or is there some merit to it? If someone with some credibility tells me he can school Coleman or Koch in practice, then I might believe it.

I played on a Top Tier Traveiling baseball team with Joe in 5th and 6th grade, he was a really good outfielder...

That has about as much relevance as what he did in AAU ball in high school...

Totally agreed. He's good enough to get recruited by SDSU, which makes him a huge stud at Waverly. That doesn't make him an MVC caliber player. Maybe he's a late bloomer, I don't know. That doesn't seem to happen much in hoops, unlike football. Here's hoping for the best though.

                              Exactly Stein...

I have always believed that you can work your tail off and make yourself a better football player, while in basketball you either have that skill set or you don't...

If he can contribute great, but I would hope that Jake is not counting on it...
