Drake going down is good for UNI

    Drake going down is good for UNI

    Not from an MVC perspective relative to representation in the Big Dance, but rather from a state of Iowa perspective and recruiting perspective.

    That being said, as members of the MVC I was pulling for the Bulldogs and they nearly gutted it out, but they will soon fade from the headlines of the Register, Courier and other statewide media. Let's face it, Drake stole UNI's thunder after the incredible football season we had. Here's to taking it back when the gridders take the field this fall!

    Nice season, Drake. You have a great group of kids, but it's time to go back to the bench.

    I disagree with nearly everything you just posted and comments like these are an embarrassment to the UNI fanbase.

      That was a very bad day for the Valley. Our best team, recipient of national attention and respect, just got beat (after trailing by 17) by the champion of a horrible basketball league.

      The Valley has done the ol moonwalk recently, and it's going to take a long time to build back up.

          You're entitled to your opinion. I'm selfish when it comes to UNI and am anxious for the Panthers to return to the forefront of the state's radar screen ala the incredible run UNI football took last fall.

          I like Newsbreakers use of the term, "moonwalk" for what the Valley has done this year. It will take more than anything Drake did alone to return the Valley to a multiple bid conference.

            Agreed, this is a bad thing. We thought we had problems this year. Try getting any respect next year. WKU played a great game though and Drake showed a lot of poise getting themselves in a position to win.
            If computers ruled college basketball the way they do football, we'd have skipped all this March Madness monotony and just waited a month for the Kansas-Kentucky title game. And watched Northern Iowa play Cornell in the Poulan Weedeater Bowl. ~ Dwight Perry The Seattle Times

              I fail to see why this is good for the "state of Iowa", and it's bad for the MVC as a whole. And, here's a news flash for you...you'll never erase Drake coverage from the Register. There's too much support in the DSM area, and always will be far more than for UNI. Case in point, the '69 team that lost to UCLA is still revered in DSM, even though they didn't really win anything. The other state papers, sure, they'll fade.

              What this pointed out to me is a point some of us have been making about the Panthers...recruit more athletic players who can create. The PG for WKU lit up Drake, and made huge 3's throughout the game.

                How is UNI going to be the front runner in the state of Iowa? Did you forget about the Iowa football program? They are going to be plastered all over the papers, as this is KF deciding year weather he stays or will get the boot from the university. So i doubt no matter how good our panther do, the State of Iowa will be watching the hawks very closely! This loss sucks for our state, i can't believe that shot went in!!! Until we can actually win something (playoffs, or mvc basketball) we will always be behind Iowa. Also i want to congratulate DRAKE on a great run, i hope no one forget this team, they showed that with two walk-ons anything is possible! Unfortunate ending, but never the less a great season!!!

                Hampton vs Iowa State
                Northwestern State vs Iowa
                Western Kentucky vs Drake

                all buzzer beaters to end the season! Next year will be our panthers shot at upsetting someone in the NCAA and get the state back on track!

                    Thanks for your respect, but it won't happen. Drake is as much a (or more) part of the DSM area as UNI is to the Cedar Valley. Hence, it will never be permanently eclipsed by a non-area school, particularly one that only had a recent growth in alumni base. The other parts of the state, other papers, I can't speak to.

                    UNI's following has grown tremendously in the DSM area, and if I'm doing marketing for UNI I'd be very happy with that. That has nothing to do with Drake, good or bad.

                      Best damn bb game I've seen all year. In no way was this good for the state, or good for UNI. Drake was (and is) the real deal this season. They were better than anybody in the state. My hat is off to them.

                        Bah!!! Fading from the headlines will not stop recruits from going to Drake. Anyone that knows anything about basketball, will know they won the MVC title and went to the NCAA tourney and UNI didn't do either. Your thinking is flawed.

                              I've been a Drake supporter most of the year, I was one of only a few who picked them to win the MVC tourney on here and one of even less who picked them to win at Butler, but I had a bad feeling they would lose today. There's just been way to much hype about Drake lately and I feared they were buying into it at least a little.

                              Too bad for the bulldogs, they would have had a cakewalk to the sweet 16 if not for a 30 foot buzzer beater, tough way to go down.
