  • New look for tonight's games

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/ncaato...ory?id=3316264

Just seen this on ESPN.com and just was wondering what your thoughts were on this.

I do not like the new setup. The main reason why is for player safety. I dont want to see players flying off the sides of the court with only 5 feet of room out of bounds.

UNI had this same set up in the Dome for the Iowa game back in 1989-1990. I don't think they had any issues but it is an accident waiting to happen.

I was just hinking why dont they just make it 10 feet all around and then you could have the players sittring up on top and there would enogh room all around

"It really opens up the whole stadium and makes it so much better for the fans," said Laing Kennedy, Kent State athletic director and a member of the NCAA Division I Basketball Committee. "Having the court elevated like that just makes for a terrific view from the upper level."
Oh yeah and we'll bring in a bit more $$$$ along the way. But of course we are doing this 'for the fans'.
If computers ruled college basketball the way they do football, we'd have skipped all this March Madness monotony and just waited a month for the Kansas-Kentucky title game. And watched Northern Iowa play Cornell in the Poulan Weedeater Bowl. ~ Dwight Perry The Seattle Times

I would guess because no one sitting in the seats on press row (or the opposite side, whichever the set up) would be able to see, thus eliminating the "advantage".

There's always going to be a fear change and this is definitely new to a lot of people. However, Williams arena up here in Minny and the stadium that Vandy plays in have had this set up for decades.

It gives it more of a "main event" look I think.

Another thing why just raise the court 2 feet y not make it more and just make the outbounds bigger

It don't see the purpose of this...I dont think that there will be any problems with it, but I think it looks dumb.

Minnesota's court has been elevated for as long as I can remember, and Iowa did it in the Fieldhouse at one time. As far as big stadiums, IIRC UCLA and Houston played on an elevated court in the Astrodome in the late '60s.

I watched an NCAA regional in St. Louis once (MSU-Kentucky?) from about 12 rows up, roughly half-court. Sounds cool, but I couldn't see anything below the players' waists due to the low rise of the seat rows. I can see where having the court on a platform would help when you're playing games in football stadiums.

That said, I wouldn't like playing on one.
