  • Next Year's MVC

This year, the top 5 was...

    (1) Southern Illinois
    (2) Northern Iowa
    (3) Wichita State
    (4) Creighton
    (5) SMS

How will these teams be next year?

I think that UNI, despite the losses of Gruber and Schneiderman, should be good. I would be somewhat surprised if the Panthers were as good next year as they were this year, but who knows.

I don't know enough about the other 4 teams to have an opinion.

I think having their third coach in 3 years has got to negatively impact Southern Illinois and don't think they will be as good next year. Of course they could slip a bit and still win the conference as they dominated the regular season this year. All the coaching turnover has to hurt their recruiting too doesn't it?

      I would think so.

I can't see Creighton dropping to seventh, look for them in the top 3 somewhere. Although UNI, and to a lesser degree Drake, are starting to get all those top Iowa kids that have been CU's bread and butter for the last 7-8 years.

Creighton loses all three of their big inside guys. They have zero experience in the post. They brought in two pretty good bigs, but they lost alot this year. SIU lost their bigs, but will have a very good backcourt. Wichita loses some depth, but could reload with their incoming talents. They could be the candidate for the "addition by subtraction award". SMS will lose some quality talent in Andrews, Colwell, and Randle, but they are young and talented. However, they don't have the greatest coach out there either. Here is how I see things going into this upcoming year.

            1. Wichita State (too much talent and good coach, if they play smart....Watch out)
            2. Southern Illinois (great guards and decent big men returning...plus they have some good newcomers)
            3. Northern Iowa (strong backcourt, inexperienced frontcourt, and depth...but we have the best coach & THE DOME!)
            4. Southwest Missouri (very good talent, very young, subpar coach...if they play together, they could be special)
            5. Creighton (not as talented as before, quality coach, good youngsters...people know DA's system by now, but can they reload again?)
            6. Drake (still not very talented, but we saw what Dr. Tom could have them do, if they improve from three, could be very potent...losing Robinson hurts more they most know, IMO)
            7. Illinois State (good guards, decent inside players, decent coach, but no depth...if they get Dentmon eligible, they will jump in the standings)
            8. Bradley (they have potential POY Marcellus Sommerville, but no guards, and a decent coach...if they find guards, they could be middle of pack)
            9. Indiana State (they have two very good guards, but that is it, no inside game and a coach that have some wondering if he can still hack it)
            10. Evansville (they will be good in 2005-06, but just not yet...still too young and not greatly talented...plus they lost Clint Cuffle...their coach is pretty good)
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.

              Predictions...

WSU - if they can play with their heads on straight, this is a very good team.
SMS - Most young talent in the league...PERIOD. If Barry lets them play, they will be tough to beat.
SIU - I have to believe they will be good, but will suffer a little bit from their third coach in three years.
UNI - loss of Gruber and Schneidermann really hurt, good in the back court, but we need Stout and company to really step up in production
Creighton - I think every year..."this will be a down year because of the loss of (enter player name here) and they still perform well. Coach Altman is a stud...they will be ok
Bradley - loss of great guards, if they play together...they can be good
Illinois State - just had one fo their best freshmen from last season leave school
Indiana State/Drake - Drake's two best guards left...can Indiana State rebound from another poor season?
Evansville - Not sure how they have fallen so far so fast.
