•The Missouri Valley Conference athletic directors, who are meeting in Kansas City this week, apparently are going to consider cutting the field of their basketball and baseball tournaments to shave expenses.

According to the Evansville Courier, one proposal could be cutting the men's basketball field from 10 teams to eight, thus eliminating the two play-in games. Also, the baseball field could shrink from six teams to four.

I'd be careful with that last one. The Valley will be down to eight baseball teams next year. If four of them have no chance to play in the league tourney, what incentive do they have to keep baseball, which is an expensive proposition?

Has any team who's had to play in the play-in game ever won the basketball tourney?

and applying that baseball logic to the current 6-team format, what incentive do the bottom 2 teams have to keep baseball? Either way, if you play a good regular season, you have just as good a chance to make the conference tournament.

      Re: MVC Potential Changes

I don't have a problem with eliminating the play-in round for Arch Madness at all. The nine and ten seeds never seem to make any noise anyway. I always figured they only decided to invite everyone because they thought the MVC could make more money that way. If they found out they were wrong, they might as well go back to an eight-team field. It wouldn't really punish the regular season winners since the top six all have the same potential path to the final anyway.

That said, I think it is unlikely they will change the men's field. The women's field is the one that should go back to eight teams, and never should have changed in the first place. Of course that probably won't happen now since Evansville won the tourney from the #9 spot this year.

Cutting baseball to four would be a mistake IMHO. Not only would it likely leave out some fairly decent teams most years, but it also eliminates the bye for the top two seeds. They shouldn't get rid of that reward for regular season performance in baseball because it is different than most other sports. Running up against an average team with one ace pitcher can screw up everything you accomplished all year, and earning the bye helps reduce that risk.

On the Men's BB side I believe the worse seed to win the tourney is a 5 seed.

The issue is that the "have's" are going to be in those top spots every year. By allowing only two other schools into the tournament, you basically seal the "have not's" fate that they won't make the tournament.

            Re: MVC Potential Changes

For me personally, I would be bummed if they took the play in games away. For one, they are always fun to go to, get an extra night of basketball in, maybe bet on the games with your friends, and have a more relaxed atmosphere before the real crowds start showing up. Its like a warmup for the real thing.

Secondly, I pencil in a trip to St. Louis every single year as one of the highlights of my year. If UNI wasn't there one year, I wouldnt go, and that would be a bummer.

I would think you could hold the play-in games on the campuses of the 7th and 8th place team on Tuesday or Wednesday, with the winners advancing to St Louis. It seems like you could save money that way, and have better attendance since it would be a home game for one of the teams. I think this is a better option than eliminating 2 teams from postseason altogether.

                Re: MVC Potential Changes

The MVC wants to have only 4 of the top 6 teams playing on Saturday. They don't want to see teams #7-10 playing on Saturday. If that happens, they know that NCAA and NIT bids are not going to be as prevalent. By having the play-in games on Thursday night, they allow the hope for all teams to make to to St. Louis for at least 2 games (and a guarantee of one). With games moved to earlier in the week, it gives the 'play-in' team a chance to get rested and thus have a great shot at knocking off the 1/2 seeds.

I would venture to bet that the money they make off of 'all-session' passes offset what they would lose in playing the Thursday night games. If those games were held in Des Moines or Evansville, do you think more fans would come out just to see their team play for the chance to make the 1st round of the MVC tourney?

Would you buy all-session passes knowing that there is a chance your team won't even be down there? I doubt it, unless you are pretty dang sure they will be there.

The Valley used to have the conference tourney rotate between conference schools. That's not the type of league the MVC has elevated itself to. We play fair and neutral, and may the best team(s) make the NCAA's. This isn't the Horizon League where the top teams get byes to the semi-finals on the top seed's home court.

The MVC has decided to keep the tourney at 10 teams for next year (all in STL).

Side note, UNI will only host one MVC Championship next year, and that is Indoor Track and Field.

Technically, football is not included among the sports offered by the Missouri Valley Conference. Even though its headquarters are in the same office as the MVC, it's a separate entity.

That is uncalled for... You yourself have claimed to want to educate others who are lurking and might be unaware of something like what Newshound pointed out.
