Obviously I'm looking forward to the SIU matchup, but also the Orange Bowl will finally be over, and then the Panthers become the big sports story in the media market.

Re: Can't wait for Wednesday
Sorry but KCRG, KWWL, and KGAN along with all Des Moines stations, Des Moines Register, and CR Gazette would all much rather cover the worst Iowa basketball team rather than give us coverage, and you forget that there will be at least a week of celebrating a hawkeye victory, or a week of excuses on how the hawkeyes should have won the game.Originally posted by UNIpanther99 View PostObviously I'm looking forward to the SIU matchup, but also the Orange Bowl will finally be over, and then the Panthers become the big sports story in the media market.

Re: Can't wait for Wednesday
Then let's hope Iowa loses so we can get some of our well-deserved lime light eh? Makes no difference to me. I don't buy the BS my hawk friends feed me that Iowa winning keeps the state in the media and it's good for UNI.Originally posted by achrist70 View PostSorry but KCRG, KWWL, and KGAN along with all Des Moines stations, Des Moines Register, and CR Gazette would all much rather cover the worst Iowa basketball team rather than give us coverage, and you forget that there will be at least a week of celebrating a hawkeye victory, or a week of excuses on how the hawkeyes should have won the game.GO PANTHERS!

Re: Can't wait for Wednesday
The media covers what the sports fans wants to see and and hear. Even the worst basketball at Iowa in a very long time ou draws a very good UNI basketball as far as attenance goes.
If you want the media to cover UNI then the fans need to step up and make it a tough ticket to get... which it is not. I wish it was different but averaging 4,300 is not the headlines in the state of Iowa.
It is the same for football....we want the media to give the coverage but we can't pack either the Dome or McLeod. Fan base grows ...media grows...so instead of complaining about the games not being on TV ....sometime, if you are within driving distance, grab a friend and attend a game!
Went to the game Sunday and had a great time now I am looking forward to a Wednesday night, and Saturday games on ESPN. 2-0 on ESPN would be a HUGE week for the Panthers! Travel to the games or set up a game watch at a local sports bar to generate some excitment in you area for the Panthers! Could be a fun week for Purple and GOLDLast edited by PurpleCatFan; 01-04-2010, 05:32 PM.

Re: Can't wait for Wednesday
To their credit, most of the Des Moines media, including the Register, is actually doing a pretty good job of covering UNI hoops.Originally posted by achrist70 View PostSorry but KCRG, KWWL, and KGAN along with all Des Moines stations, Des Moines Register, and CR Gazette would all much rather cover the worst Iowa basketball team rather than give us coverage, and you forget that there will be at least a week of celebrating a hawkeye victory, or a week of excuses on how the hawkeyes should have won the game.
And the Register particularly is doing their best to ignore the train wreck going on in Iowa City.Winning is more fun than losing.

Re: Can't wait for Wednesday
no kidding ryan19....I attended UNI when we played BB in the dome.....IMO it was a total sleeper and lacked the intensity of a venue where the fans are on "top" of the game. The only advantage of the dome was early on in the game as the opposing team tried to gain some depth perception on rim. I have since attended a few games in McLeod and I think the atmosphere is FAR superior to the dark very empty feeling dome.

Re: Can't wait for Wednesday
In some ways Griff has a point the UNI did have it's benefits, the last year we played there we had multiple 10,000 + games, and shooting in a dome wasn't easy for opposing teams. With that being said I would never move there instead of the McCleod, we have a great intimate arena, that we just need to fill. When it was filled for the Iowa State Volleyball game, that was an awesome experience, hopefully when the students come back we can be around 6,500 a game. I do think people will begin to jump on the bandwagon.

Re: Can't wait for Wednesday
I was worried that there might be a better shooting background in the McLeod Center than there was in the Dome and that might work to UNI's disadvantage. But if the Dome was such a bad place to play for opponents, UNI's home record should have been much, much better than it was. It should have been close to Duke's home record over the last 25 years. Opponents' field goal and free throw percentage should be better now than it was. But you would have to go through every home game for a certain period of time to find out the answer to that.Originally posted by achrist70 View PostIn some ways Griff has a point the UNI did have it's benefits, the last year we played there we had multiple 10,000 + games, and shooting in a dome wasn't easy for opposing teams. I've never been to a game in the McLeod Center but even when it's half full it sounds like a full house. You put 3,000-4,000 in the Dome and you don't get that noise."And immediately, (P'Allen Stinnett's) Facebook status was spouting vulgarities towards the university."

Re: Can't wait for Wednesday
The start of what I'll call "the Run" of multiple 20 win seasons, NCAA berths etc. didnt have too much under 8,000 most games in the Dome. Yea 2004, iffy student section, but once the wins built up the students came out in force, especially the epic game against Iowa. It was a fun atmosphere...just cuz its not loud doesn't make it fun. I think it was also awesome that 3/4 of the bleacher seating was all students. behind both baskets and majority of the sideline behind the benches. I remember multiple times giving Barry Hinson a hard time and he actually turned around to the student section and told us to shut upOriginally posted by CincyPanther88 View PostI was worried that there might be a better shooting background in the McLeod Center than there was in the Dome and that might work to UNI's disadvantage. I think the McLeod just needs more seating, more variety. Its too dull IMO.
I understand its collegiate athletics, which is a bi-product of entertainment and money making, but when the limited choices and the $ come into affect...really turns some people off. Again, just my opinion. Agree to disagree. I like the McLeod, I just think it should be better.

Re: Can't wait for Wednesday
I heard Jim Ecker on Gary's show a couple of weeks ago right before the Wyoming game. He was there to cover the game as a freelancer for a couple of the Wyoming papers, and because the roads were bad, the Register couldn't send anyone over to cover the game and asked him to write one up for them as well. I see he also had his name on stories for the Register for the last two games. I wonder if this is still a temporary gig, or if he is now the Register's beat writer for UNI. In any event, I know he has rubbed some people the wrong way on baseball and a few other things, but I always thought his coverage of UNI basketball was fantastic for the Gazette and I hope the Register keeps him on.__________________
