Re: Orear just got drafted
I don't see the Reds allowing him to to play basketball. Spring training starts at the end of february for pitchers and catchers. These days you have to show up ready to pitch. He hasn't been around baseball, and he has the tools but needs to be polished up. My guess is if he signs his days at UNI are done.

Re: Orear just got drafted
Sadly I agree...especially because they used a 13th round pick on him. When he said he was planning on coming back he was also expecting to be drafted no sooner than the 20th.Originally posted by Scrambler View PostI don't see the Reds allowing him to to play basketball. Re: Orear just got drafted
The Reds had to be educated going in. They knew he had a year of eligibility remaining and I would think the plan would be that he play rookie ball this summer, plays basketball, and then leaves school for extended spring training and plays short season Class A ball next year.
I could be completely wrong, but the Reds had to know the ramifications of this pick going in.

Re: Orear just got drafted
yeah I guess the key factor is what he told them he would do... every team calls and asked if you will sign prior to being drafted.... there is no way they give a guy who needs work 40-50k to not have him working on getting better. We need to remember he was drafted on potential, meaning he has work to do. I would be unbelievably surprised if they allowed him to play. if he gets hurt they are out the signing bonus. he was drafted high enough that he would be dumb not to sign but low enough the Reds wouldn't care to let him go.Originally posted by BCPanther View PostThe Reds had to be educated going in. Re: Orear just got drafted
You will know this better than I would Scrambler...
If O'Rear doesn't sign by the August cutoff date, does he become a free agent, or does he reenter the draft next year?? Free agency pretty much guarantees him a shot somewhere, but the draft guarantees nothing but the chance to lose money.

Re: Orear just got drafted
What do you guys think of his draft positioning for next year if he doesn't sign? I've heard of other prospects doing this, but not sure about how high round 13 is relative to other picks and whether that makes it stupid for him not to go. A good analogy would be the NBA or NFL, where some players have stayed in school in order to ensure first round (or lottery) status for the following year. Any insight from those more in the know is appreciated.Originally posted by Scrambler View PostI would be unbelievably surprised if they allowed him to play. if he gets hurt they are out the signing bonus. he was drafted high enough that he would be dumb not to sign but low enough the Reds wouldn't care to let him go.
Edit: I'm not saying Lucas is first round talent for next year. My question is whether he may be able to move up to 9th, 10th round etc., or potentially remain around the same place? In other words, does he hurt himself substantially by holding out another year, or does it matter given his perceived potential?Last edited by SteinPizza; 06-08-2010, 04:23 PM.

Re: Orear just got drafted
With being one more year out of baseball, I don't see how he could go higher. He has no opportunity to prove himself past where he is now. I think being away from baseball for another full year would hurt his status??? But, idk.Originally posted by SteinPizza View PostWhat do you guys think of his draft positioning for next year if he doesn't sign? I would have to look it up to be sure... but I think since he has eligiblity left they have to sign him by Aug 15th. If they don't and he is fully enrolled in school he doesn't become a free agent but goes back into the draft the following year.. If this was his senior year then yes he would have some free agent rights. Either way he would leave a lot of money on the table.... seniors only get paid a couple grand and a plane ticket. Right now he has some leverage.... he will get 40-50k and school paid for...depending on who signs above him and the amount of money they have left once they get to him. best bet for him is he signs and does well then they send him to instructs in AZ in the fall to get more work/exposure.

Re: Orear just got drafted
it would hurt him.... next year they know they can wait til the 20th round and draft him... what is he going to do then? say no? then what? your done playing... right now he has leverage, he can use the going back to school thing against the Reds in order for them to raise the signing bonus. Unless you are a supperstar most seniors don't get "paid" when drafted.Originally posted by SteinPizza View PostWhat do you guys think of his draft positioning for next year if he doesn't sign?
