Re: UNI 2010 #3 Top Basketball Story of the Year

UNI became the first Missouri Valley Conference champ to advance to the Sweet 16 since Indiana State, with Larry Bird, in 1979.
I really hate that stat being quoted. The MVC has had several sweet sixteen teams since '79. Is is really important to note that UNI is the only conference tournament champion to do so since then? It makes our conference sound bad.

I've never understood that either, seems like such a strange thing to quote and it's been stated over and over. The Valley's had 4 different teams in the Sweet 16 in what the last 5 yrs?
"I think they're very good," Farley said of the preseason top 25 Hawkeyes. "But so are we."

Not that it matters but I'd contend Butler was the biggest story, followed by us, then Duke. Just because Duke won it all doesn't make their story "bigger" IMO.

The quote states MVC conference champ, on MVC team period

Was SIU or Bradley conference champs the year they did it?

I know for a fact that WSU wasn't.

SIU reached the sweet sixteen as regular season champion, but not as tournament champion (which is what the NCAA recognizes).

Then that stat is technically correct.

It's a classic half truth. Whoever came up with that probably works on political campaigns.

Here is the press release from where that stat was pulled:

Page Not Found (404): It looks like you're lost... The page you are looking for no longer exists.

Hard to blame the SID for it. As stated, it's correct. And even though it doesn't paint the conference in the best light, it is one of 13 bullet points.

Everyone understands that it is factually correct. That doesn't make it less misleading or more relevant.

Last year will be a fairy tale story for our program, but I hate to say it will always be the year that truly could have been the way the tournament was opening up. I wouldn't be afraid to steak a claim that we could have made the NC game.

I know it. That is the only sad thing about last year. We could have made oh so much further...

We very easily could have gone to the the final four.

Sorry buster but I just had to...

In other news, my favorite part of that story is how they talk about Turner & Wall say that Turner won the Wooden, Naismith and AP awards and that Wall picked up the "Yahoo! Sports POY honor". Ya know, cuz that award is important to everyone that didn't win it...

A school that routinely gets some of the best recruits in the nation and has a legend as coach winning the title is the #1 "story"? Really?

I have no problem with Butler's run to the title game (and nearly winning it) being #1 - AMAZING story for a program their size; but for one magical week last March, EVERYONE knew who Ali was after knocking down the tourney favorite. In terms of impact, that story will be talked about far more in the next 10-20 years than a 4th Duke title. I still remember the Richmond Spiders beating 2 seed Syracuse, for crying out loud, and that was 2 decades ago. Oh well, it's one (likely East Coast) guy's opinion, anyway. Doesn't lessen my enjoyment of what was accomplished last year one iota.
Give us a yell, HO! The purple and the gold
                              Victory for U-N-I!

Find out what the other team wants to do, then take it away from them.
