I am not trying to bad mouth any of our coaches here, but I was wondering if we really have a "true" post coach. I know that coach Green is our post coach, or at least it seems that way in warm ups, but I just can't imagine that he himself was a post player. I know that Jake was a back court player, along with coach Johnson, and I would assume that coach Hogan was a wing also. I guess what I am asking is if adding a little height someway to our coaching staff would improve our post play. I know that you are really only supposed to have 3 assistant coaches, as coach Berry was technically an adviser. Maybe we could find a grade assistant of some sort or hire another director of basketball operations or an assistant one. I know the athletic department doesn't have a whole lot of extra funds around right now but this is only a thought.

Re: Question about our coaches
I agree that coach Green is a heck of a coach, this is just a thought, I agree there are people who were great players who would be or are poor coaches, and there are people who never even played the game who are great coaches.Originally posted by r54uni View PostBeing tall doesn't mean you can coach posts. Coach green is a smart, smart basketball coach and we are lucky to have him. If we bring in Jason Reese it doesn't mean our post will play like him.

Re: Question about our coaches
Green does a great job. The fact that Echenique stumbled around every time Kerwin and someone else trapped him is testament to that. I think you have every right to ask this next year if we can't get it done, but we just simply had NO post players who could play in the Valley day in and day out successfully. They were either too small, or too young.Originally posted by achrist70 View PostI am not trying to bad mouth any of our coaches here, but I was wondering if we really have a "true" post coach. Re: Question about our coaches
New member here, but have read Panther Nation on a regular basis. A common thread seems to keep popping up in the most recent forums in the last couple of weeks. A lot of members seem to question (maybe question isn't the best word, but lack for better of) our coaching staff as far as coaching posts and/or recruitment of posts.
Just a bit ago I read a thread on why some people wonder what we are going to do next year for post. For starters, if things went the way this year that our CURRENT COACHES had planned for this season and seasons to come, Doug McDermott would be in a Panther uniform, most likely coming off the bench. To the critics who say Jake would eventually be coming off the bench instead of Doug (placing a Doug as starter), being a true freshman this doesn't seem plausible. If Jake wasn't holding up to his potential, he would still start due to seniority but see limited time until his play improved.
That being said, with McDermott there would have been hardly a hole in our post play for this year even with O'Rear out and for next year. As you can see, our recruiting is doing fine. Secondly, as to the member who commented on Green's coaching ability, we could have done no better defending Echenique. Kerwin played his best game of the year in the MVC tourney.
As for next year, Tuttle will be the big man. May not start, but will see good PT. He is twenty pounds heavier now than McDermott was when he graduated. He will need to put on weight but with UNI's Strength & Cond. program this will be no problem.
Next year will be a rebuilding year, but the year after that we should expect to be in the top 3 in the MVC again. Also, do not forget all of our posts who have developed from Soph to Jr year. Jake still is young, quoted from Coach Jake as "one of the most talented players" Jake has ever coached. Adam Koch was a great player, but skinnier and not as strong to the hoop his Sophomore year but became a stud coming in to his Junior year.
We have been so spoiled at UNI with Jake that the one year we had such high hopes didn't turn out like we thought. Keep your heads up, great years to come. PS -- not getting Gibbs was a blessing in disguise.. landed us the guard from Texas - Deon Mitchell - with the extra scholarship, who may even have a chance to start next year.

Re: Question about our coaches
Jake actually coached the post players when Mac was coach, if my memory serves me correctly. The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.

Re: Question about our coaches
I'm as disappointed in our post play as anyone but take a step back and look what we were put in at various points. D$ bailed on us taking away our likely 6th man and 2nd post player. That means to start the season we had a senior, true freshman, ans two rs sophs in the post. Out of those 4 only 1 had any real post experience. We managed well due to how good Luke was.
When luke went down that left us with a true freshman who was to be more of a high post ans out player, a rs soph who is more of a wing forward at this point (though I gunk that will change and was going to anyway) and a rs soph that had a total of 7 minutes game experience and zero of it mean anything.
Given all of that and the fact we were still competitive with every team we played, even if we didn't win, I'd say the future is bright

Re: Question about our coaches
UNI 83, that's true, but I'm still mildly disappointed with the coaches for not getting Pehl more ready to play meaningful minutes. DMac was a freshman coming in, so an unknown, and O'Rear was one injury away from giving us no depth.
Jake Koch is not that guy, as his game doesn't translate to back to the basket style ball. Nor should it, since he's athletic enough to drive and can shoot from outside. Pehl, or someone they failed to recruit, should've been at least the partial answer. Again, mild disappointement, nothing big or reason to bash Jake and staff.

Re: Question about our coaches
The thing is that Pehl had come leaps and bounds from where he was three years ago. I just don't think his ceiling is that high.
I think it comes down to instincts. You can see him thinking, he's just not one of those guys that has a great feel for the game. I think its about time we lay off him and just realize that through nobodies fault, he just is what he is and what we see now is what we are going to see from him going forward...

Re: Question about our coaches
You never know. Any game slows down for a player once he/she gains more experience. It's just as likely he improves greatly. Not just instincts, but defensive footwork, post moves, etc. He doesn't seem to have anywhere near Jordan's natural touch for shooting, but he could still develop into a nice player.Originally posted by BCPanther View PostThe thing is that Pehl had come leaps and bounds from where he was three years ago. Re: Question about our coaches
This is the same bunch of coaches that coached Jordan Egelsleder from a guy who could barely walk and chew gum to someone who was a force in the paint his junior and especially his senior year. They must have helped O'Rear out down there as well. The Panthers really missed Jordan but they seemed to be on a roll before Lucas got hurt. Pehl wasn't in the plans until Mac got the Creighton job and took Doug with him. If Doug is here with a healthy Lucas, Pehl is an afterthought. He's playing perhaps a few minutes in the first half or garbage time or a few minutes if Lucas or Doug were injured or in foul trouble. A big guy in the middle would be awesome. But they don't grow on trees and they usually go to the BCS schools. I don't know if Pehl will ever be a great player but he's not a finished product."And immediately, (P'Allen Stinnett's) Facebook status was spouting vulgarities towards the university."

Re: Question about our coaches
I believe that you have to be invited, it is a great idea though, Jordan benefited greatly from it.
