  • Iowa rule

Hey guys, Jimmy Lemke, your black and gold panther brother from Milwaukee here. I have a question that I'm sure you guys can help with.

There seems to be a belief among a lot of people that there is a law that was passed by Iowa legislature forcing all four Division I schools to play each other in home-and-homes so long as the teams were on the same level.

First off, is there any truth to this? I know some people can be rumor mongerers.

Second, is there any way I could see the law in print? I searched high and low online but my research skills are taking me nowhere.

I appreciate any help you guys can give me. Also, congratulations for joining the conga line of teams to kick the **** out of us this season. I don't know where it came from.

That 'Law' is an urban legend. The legislature strongly, strongly reccommended it in the 80s, a resolution may have been passed encouraging it, but there was never actually a law...

      Re: Iowa rule

I have never heard of that "law" before?

I will say this that the state schools should play each other, but from the sounds of both hawkeye fans and panther fans, neither side want to play each other. UNI would much rather play another team and Iowa fans feel the same way.

I am just wondering what all the conference shuffling, what is going to happen. Is the UNI vs Iowa football game not going to happen. is Iowa vs ISU going to dissolve. From the way it sounds like the Big Ten is wanting to expand even more and go to a 9 game conference schedule. Should be interesting over the next couple of years with all the conference movement.

Will UNI move to FBS in football or stay in the FCS?

Personally, I think the 2014 football game with Iowa will happen. 2018 will only happen if we are FBS by then, IMO.

With the new format, teams are going to get killed for playing FCS teams.

I really don't see Iowa making it into the "playoffs", no matter who they schedule. Unless it's expanded to 16+ teams.

I remember the idea of a law. But sadly no such law ever existed. As a uni fan I would love to have a home and home with Iowa. i only object to playing on a neutral court. We had a good thing going with the home and Homes. 5&5 over the last ten years. Iowa had to go and screw it up.

                Re: Iowa rule

Back in the 80's, Iowa & ISU wouldn't commit to play UNI in basketball (sound familiar). There was talk floating around the legislature to pass a law to require both to play us every year in both basketball and football. It was probably an empty threat, but because of all the talk we started the home/home with both schools. It lasted 20 years.

If the "classic" doesn't prove to be popular, maybe we can get some "talk" in the legislature again.

Never existed and never should. Not the province of government.

We don't even play Iowa State this year.

I'm not a fan of the Des Moines event as implemented and would really like the home/home arrangement back.... That being said, this is far from something I would want my legislators working on.
"I think they're very good," Farley said of the preseason top 25 Hawkeyes. "But so are we."

While I agree with that last statement, Iowa isn't the only state to have considered this, I can think of many examples of a state government trying to step in and make two state institutions play each other, and there are probably 100's

Wisconsin has their schedules since 2001-02 up at their athletics website. They've played UWM and UWGB every one of those twelve years, and only played at Milwaukee in 01, 07, and 11. They played in Green Bay in 02 and 09.
