  • Down with Parrish

So I was just looking at the CBS Sports (http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball) and noticed that the title of an article within the Top NCAA BB Headlines reads "Podcast: How great was NIU-Wichita State?".

Below is a link to the actual article which was written by Gary Parrish:

I don't listen to podcasts, so I have absolutely no idea if Parrish is attempting to mock the game or if he's actually saying that it was a great game.

Looks like someone fixed it. It says northern iowa now.

      Negative, it still says NIU.

        I took a listen.

They were very complimentary of the game. In fact, they said it was "as good as it gets...in terms of atmosphere...and that includes Duke-UNC, Kentucky-Arkansas, you name it". Said it was a very high level game.

Said both teams should be top 4 seeds and are both in top 16 best teams in country...and think both will make the 2nd weekend of NCAA tourney.

Said they hope to see UNI and WSU meet up again in Valley Championship.
Winning is more fun than losing.

Its weird to get such respect and belief from national writers like that coming off of a 14 point loss, when you consider how hard we had to scratch and claw for every ounce of respect in 2010, which was not much.

We were 28-4 heading into the tourney in 2010 and got a 9 seed as an unranked team. This year, we are going to be a top 5 seed and top 15 ranked with a very similar resume.

You beat Kansas 1 time and the whole initial perception of your program changes.

This is absolutely right. The '10 run is paying another round of dividends today.

Especially from a guy like Parrish.

I don't think we can over look the help that WSU has given us as a mid-major and member of the MVC. A final four and an undefeated regular season put them in the national spotlight and we are experiencing a little of that shine this season. Take nothing away from UNI and our outstanding season but from a national perspective both the 2010 Kansas game and WSU have helped.

This is correct, and also absolutely the way it should be. UNI hadn't won a tourney game since '90 coming into the '10 tourney. UNI, like other mid to low majors, was an unproven commodity, and the MVC was weak that year. It's understandable why most national media and analysts would underrate us, although I remember everyone here was understandably upset at the 9 seed. 6 or 7 would've been a little more realistic.

Bottom line, the onus for proving you belong is on the mid major school, not the other way around. To do that, you have to win games, and beat people you shouldn't. Fail to do that, and you are relegated to a certain amount of disrespect, or at least some disbelief. It's pretty tough to get yourself past the eye test without actually winning games against higher level competition. Beating a bunch of other schools that people deem as "cute" doesn't cut it.

I hate to say it, but I think Creighton also helped us as well.
