  • What We Learned Tonight

Coach Jacobson is picking right up where last year ended...what a fantastic job of coaching tonight. I knew Jake was the right guy to replace Mac, but he impressed the socks off me tonight. Excellent gameplan by all the staff, and great in-game decisions/play calls by Jake.

Jordan Eglseder is as advertised. We had yet to see him play against a fellow big man. I couldn't tell who was the McDonald's All-American and who was the 1st Team All-Corn Belt. Jordan moved well and will continue to improve.

Brooks McKowen...still is struggling to find his shot, but the man dictated the flow of the game for 40 minutes. He made Washington beat us at our game. UNI outexecuted and outcoached Washington tonight. They just had some better athletes and skilled players to overcome UNI's gameplan (having the game on your home court didn't hurt either). Brooks had 9 assists. Outside of scoring more points, what else do you want out of him? 9 assists?! A point guard is suppose to distribute and he did that all night. Big ups to Brooks.

Grant Stout and Eric Coleman are still All-Valley performers. They make it look easy. I think we will miss Stout's turnaround jump shot next year. It's simple and easy, but he does it so well. Coleman handled the ball well all night. I still think it was a good decision for him to drive on Hawes, just maybe should have kicked it back out before the shot. Probably could have called a foul there too, but that's neither here nor there.

Adam Viet...we haven't seen the real Adam Viet until now. He's been injured and playing behind a loaded guard corp before. His shot is so sweet (outside of the air ball ). Kudos to Adam for picking up his defensive game in the off-season so that he's not such a liability out there. Don't get me wrong, Adam is still going to be the worst defender on the court when out there, but he did some great things to contribute defensively, AND he was playing smart. He's been down on his luck, but this year it looks like things are turning around. That's huge for him and his hometown of Ackley. If he gets things rolling, you are going to have fans coming out of the woodwork from Grundy County to see their boy Viet stroke the three in 'The Mac'.

We also learned that Travis Brown and Jared Josten can hold their own on defense. Travis is probably not quick enough just yet to be where I'm sure the coaching staff wants him to be, but as he learns to be the primary defender (or secondary), he's going to learn how to get things done. I thought he got called for some ticky-tack foul(s) that probably limited some of his minutes tonight, but he was playing hard and doing a great job as a sophomore on a fantastic set of guards (who were 3 inches taller than him).

We also learned that the 'Fab Five' (throw Kerwin in there) are going to be able to contribute good minutes this year. How calm and cool is Stephen Jones? Adam Koch didn't play as well tonight, but he didn't make any mistakes that I saw either. The whole group of freshmen are going to be up and down throughout the year, but as long as 1-2 of them are on every night, this team is going to continue to get better and go far. Tonight wasn't the night for Kwadzo to shine...Brooks was doing too good of a job setting the tempo, but Kwadzo looked VERY good when in there. The future at point guard is good as gold in his hands.

The player development that was a trademark of Mac carries on in this team...the coaching level didn't drop off at all...the timeouts called and playing calling were money all night...As the team becomes better shooters, the season is going to improve.

We need EVERYONE to pack the Mac Sunday and give these guys a huge round of applause for what they showed this weekend. UW-Milwaukee will present similar tempo issues that UNI has faced already with all three previous opponents...what a great prep for them! Get loud and let's start a home winning streak in our new venue! Go Panthers!

And...that UNI hosts a Basketball Travelers Classic next year in the McLeod Center (there are more than one). That means 3 teams are coming to 'The Mac' to play some ball!

    3 Classic games + Iowa + Loyola + Bracket Buster 2007 + BB 2008 + 9 conference games= already 16 home games for UNI!

I thought we were already told that our Bracket Buster Game this year would be on the road after having to straight home Braket Buster Games?

The only thing that frustrated me a bit in last night's game was that we didn't take advantage of Egelseder's size on offense in the 2nd half.

There were several trips down the floor where he had good position down low on the right hand side with Washington fronting him where we could have lobbed it in for a 3-5 foot shot, at most.

He showed in the 1st half how adept he is at catching that high pass, keeping the ball high and putting it off the glass soft.

We ended up getting much poorer shots on those trips.

Other than that it was an impressive showing. A couple defensive lapses cost us, and that's how thin the margin is.

Coleman was a force. Showed great skills on the boards, passing, scoring, handling the ball. Love his game.
Winning is more fun than losing.

The "2007 Bracket Buster game" that was eluded to would be the "return game" from the team that will host us this season.

What stuck out to me the most is Ben Jacobson. Last year, especially SIU in St. Louis and Georgetown, Mac got so afraid to have someone make a mistake in a close ballgame. Remember all of the timeouts and set plays?? Tonight in the last six minutes Jacobson LET THEM PLAY!! I am so encouraged by where this guy is going to be as a head coach by the time the Valley season rolls around.

If this is a "down-year" I can't wait to see what a "good-year" looks like!!

Got a question for everyone. Last night there was a shot of Adam Koch from the back and I couldn't help but think that it was Grant Stout as a freshman. Same kind of body build with a lot of potential of putting on some weight.

I had the same thought and had to remind myself that Stout is 32 and not 34.

Not to play devils advocate but he also had 5 turnovers. Some of those turnovers came at crusial times. We can't have our point guard lead the team in turnovers. Also, we don't need Brooks to shoot threes, we need him to be a passer. I don't see why when the shot clock gets into single digits, we have him do a one-on-one with the man guarding him. GIVE THE BALL TO A SCORER!! BE A PASSER, NOT A SCORER!! TAKE CARE OF THE BALL AND LIMIT TURNOVERS!!

I ditto this. Mac was such a control freak it really affected the team sometimes, let them ball.

I second that Brooks HAS to get his turnovers down...that is unacceptable.

It's interesting that Jake has mentioned "status quo" in every interview I've read, however, he obviously learned a lot from watching last year' team fade (no, more like die) down the stretch. I'd guess the freshmen, and Viet, will continue to develop to the point that he can consistently use a nine deep bench. Nice job, Bcrawf, of pointing that out in the above post.

PTTB, I'll also take very slight issue with your post above regarding Egelseder and Hawes. Hawes' game appears to be more refined at this point, but not by a huge margin. One of my friends who follows such things mentioned that Hawes could've been an NBA lottery pick out of high school, so Jordan compares pretty favorably considering.

i totaly agree with everything. just a few quick comments. and a question. were the refs as bad as they seemed listening to gary and his broadcast. it seems as a lot of "nickel and dimers" were called on us particularly in the second half. (Fouls: UNI 18 uw 9). No wonder they have a 35 game home winning streak if the officiating is such. also about mckown. it seems like a confidence thing with him. i recently looked back at his stats and his freshman which we all remember was coming off an illustreous high school career was spectacular. he average 7.5 points in just 21.4 minutes of play while making the valley's all freshman team. Since then his minutes have went up and his point totals have significantly dropped. now i realize that he is our PG and he has responsibility to distribute the basketball, but in doing that it seems as though he has lost his shot. He needs to go back to his freshman year and regain that care free attitude just like back in high school. Don't get me wrong Brooks is an adequate basketball player I guess I just saw him playing a different role in terms of scoring offense with those teases he gave us back in 2003-2004. Again I don't mean to put Brooks down. What are your opinions on this matter?

I was very, very impressed with the Panthers last night.

I know one game is WAY too early to judge, but I like the way Coach Jacobson handles the game more than Coach McDermott. Don't get me wrong, they're both tremendous, but as somebody pointed out above, I think Coach Mac has/had a tendency to over-coach.

Granted this may be the deepest team in UNI history (I remember their NCAA Tournament team in 1990 was fairly deep), but Coach Jake also isn't afraid to use his bench. Last year's team fell off in late February in large part due to the high amount of minutes that the starters were having to play---I still contest that the whole team was just leg-weary down the stretch.

Now, there almost seems to be more talent than there are minutes to go around---fortunately most of it is young and those kids will understand that their day will come.

That was pretty much an even game. Appleby's three that put them up 4 was a dagger on a good defensive possession. The ticky-tack moving screen call on Stout hurt as well---that was not a good call.

Overall, very impressed. UNI definitely has the best team in the state of Iowa.
