  • Game 13 - Missouri State Bears

Well, 2 minutes to game time. Let's do something good to end the year! These guys deserve another solid win. Go Panthers!

Let’s see if we can at least get a shot at the basket with the ball coming out of this TV timeout. So far, two turnovers by UNI with the ball after the under 16 and 12 timeouts.

        Pretty fun game so far…

I guess not, make that 0-3 with turnovers coming out of TV timeouts. Need to do better than that.

Yikes. The last 9 minutes of this half are some if the worst ball we've played all year - and that's saying a lot.
To avoid confusion - my username is baseball (Cy Young award) related, NOT for the Cyclones.

Low energy, frustrated, turnovers are killing UNI. Absolutely no offensive flow or movement. MSU totally outplaying and out-coaching UNI.

Thank goodness for that deep three-ball by Born to give us a fighting chance.

My advice to Panther fans is to not get too high or too low on this team. They’re going to do some good things but they’re also going to do some frustrating things. And unfortunately more of the latter than the former.

That is what happens when your team is entirely freshmen and sophomores.

This will likely end up being Jake’s worst team.

Commentators talking about how young we are but it’s so misleading due to the Covid year. We are still young but saying how we have all these sophomores is pretty misleading. A group of these guys are 3rd and 4th year system guys who just haven’t developed in the way we would have expected. The future seems bright but it’s glaring how much we struck out on recruiting for a few cycles.

I have seen Panther basketball since the late 60s and there have been countless ups and downs. One thing I have learned is that neither success nor failure are permanent. That said, this is hard to watch. I am sure the Panther players are frustrated too.

Length and athleticism are going to bother us without a traditional ball handler.

Learn from it. Move on. Get ready for the Birds on Saturday.

I get annoyed every time Braley mentions that they are all sophomores and freshmen. I completely agree. Born, Anderson, Betz, and Henry have all had a lot of time in this system. They are young, don’t get me wrong, but that point gets overblown a lot.

Missouri St. just absolutely played great tonight. Couldn’t miss on offense and played great aggressive defense. Early on I was convincing myself the guys would be ok because Mo St. was making so many contested shots and shooting well above averages, but then the turnovers snowballed and it was game over.

Thoughts on the guys: I like Campbell’s demeanor on the court, but he is very sloppy with the ball. Drew Daniel had a nice stretch early, but proved later why having a walk on getting significant minutes isn’t ideal. Duax played well. He was aggressive and his athleticism is so badly needed. Tytan played well with limited offensive opportunities. They couldn’t defend him on the post and he knew it. Henry had a nice dunk, but he also got stuffed at the hoop multiple times previously. Just once, I’d like to have one of those long, athletic bigs on our side. Born hit a lot of shots to keep it from getting completely out of hand, but he also has a really bad habit of forcing a bad three if the opposing team goes on a little run. You can almost see it coming every time. He’s a great shooter, but it’s not the same as AJ where he can shoot contested threes.

I know complementing Ford isn’t encouraged here, but he made some really nice calls and adjustments out of timeouts. That’s the best job he’s done against UNI for sure.

One last thing… what the crap is going on with our fans? Are we seriously talking to players so much that they take personal agendas against our crowd? Can we please not be that fan base? I hope I’m misunderstanding what’s been happening so far this year, but it has been every game that opposing players have gotten into it with our fans.

I wish our players would be more aggressive during physical games like this one where the refs aren’t calling much.

All three of those refs are regular NCAA Tourney refs with at least Kissinger doing Final Four. That is how games tend to get called in the tourney. Our kids need to learn from at and fight through it. Missouri State was able to play the way they wanted to, just trying to out-athlete our guys and we were not able to impose our will on and get them frustrated as we have in the past. Still too much thinking on where we might want to pass the ball which allows the defense to get in the lanes. Need to trust your teammates to be where they are supposed to be and make those passes crisp.
Number of times on Sports Illustrated cover:
Ben Jacobson coached teams = 2
UNI teams coached by everyone ban thinks is better = 0

I also think it's time to stick Ege out there for meaningful minutes and figure out what he is. He can't possibly be worse defensively and his vision should make offense easier.

We're generally going to be in trouble when we don't get anything from Campbell and Wolf offensively and tonight said that loud and clear.
