What is going on with Trey's FT shooting lately, jeez.

It's been mostly even tonight on the boards. We are a man short on the depth chart down low, and I think we improved there to some degree since the early part of the schedule.Originally posted by CincyPanther88 View PostWe're going to lose a lot of games this year because of poor rebounding.

That drive and dish he did to Will was nasty. Too bad we couldn't finish that, would've been a pretty highlight.Originally posted by orangetennis View PostBen is so much better when he's aggressive, hunting his shot. We really need him to find his groove as we enter the conference season.
Regardless, great win tonight. Oakland is a good team that will win some games this year. Heck of a schedule they've played already.

We played well defensively tonight and really slowed them down. You could see Oakland's potential by getting down hill and we, for the most part, were able to stop it and slow down the game. I don't know if the Panthers get enough credit for their defense. They are one of the better teams in the country.
I would love to see Ben be more aggressive. We saw this in the first few games of the season. I am not sure if it is a coach decision or his. He has so much skill, I would love to see him push it. It was awesome see Leon take over more often than not. It was pretty apparent to see how much better Trey is getting his shots off than RJ. Of course, RJ is an assist master and if that is his role, that is great, but we need someone to make up the difference between Trey and RJ. Tristan and Will both had great games. That was awesome to see.
Sadly, unless we get back to shooting 80+% from the line, we are going to lose games. We all know, many games are won/loss at the line. I hate to see our Panthers lose winnable games when they can't make their free throws.

I get the sentiment but shooting 80% plus from the line as a team would probably put you top 5 in the country. At this point I would be happy with the high 60s.Originally posted by 1994grad View Post

You're right. I will take 70+%. It appears that 2021-2022 was our best year at 78.9 percent. I believe AJ and Bowen Born certainly helped those statistics.Originally posted by GoPanthers85 View PostI get the sentiment but shooting 80% plus from the line as a team would probably put you top 5 in the country. My takeaways from being at the game. Oakland's zone and they way the defended caused us some issues at times. Kept us out of the paint and we missed some open looks early. I think they will win a bunch of games in their league and are a well coached basketball team. I guess that guys been there 42 years for a reason.
The good from yesterday and all season is that we defend really really well. UNI basketball under Coach Jake is at it's best when we defend at an elite level and this team is in that mold. We have a lot of long, athletic kids who sell out on that end and can defend multiple player. They took a team that scores a ton of points and dictated tempo and style. We win games even when we don't shoot at a really high percentage.
Leon looked great - Will does a nice job. I really like Ben in the starting lineup at 6-8 as a gaurd. I know Max defends at an elite level too so we're splitting hairs. KP has found a role as a stretch 4 that he's really better suited for as a defender. He missed some open looks but still looked confident and knocked down a big 3 late.
The bad - it's a broken record. Missed free throws are haunting us. This game was closer than it needed to be...it killed us against Wichita and Tulsa. Some nights 3's don't go in. It happens those are defended shots from distance but we have to be better at non contested 15fters. I'm 100% certain it's being addressed but it would be nice to see it translate to a game day to start building some confidence.
