Thanks for the update. I was only able to catch the 2nd half and turned the TV off after the end of the game. Seems like TO's were the culprit. Tough to run our offense most of the night out by the 1/2 court line due to the SIU ball pressure. Wish we could've figured out how to attack that pressure more effectively.

Why are you so adament that it was inexeperience that provoked the T?? Just because the guy looked young? Maybe the bench had been riding the whole crew all night (and rightfully so apparently) and they were sick of it. I'm not saying this means they got the calls right or anything but it doesn't mean you can keep whining and not expect to get hit with one once in a while.

Watching Hartzell right now on TV Indiana vs Illinois telling Sampson to sit down and relax....

Any good official will give warning 1st...

Jake got two (warnings) at Creighton game was there right behind bench in coaches seats...Hightower and Mcall both gave warnings

Talked to Uni coaches right after game and they said Jake used no profanity, no personal attack, just said "Thats a Foul"...

They said the official overreacted...I believe our coaches... and I have known Jake for 20 years...Never known him to lose his cool or be disrespectfull...Especially with this much on the line..he is too smart for that!

P.S. Even your oppents are seeing it this way...?

Thanks for the insight CoachDags! The T was the hardest part to understand on TV. Thanks for providing some clarity.

If you point fingers point at the officials.

I'm not one that is quick to blame anything on officiating but I really think last night's game was inconsistently officiated. If the officials are going to let them get away with playing the SIU style than they need to not call the same things on the the other end. Brooks, Eric, and Grant all got called for offenses their counterparts were doing without getting called for.

While it's easy to point fingers at any particular player or coach for one mistake it seemed to me the inconsistent officiating was much more the "cause" of the loss than any one miscue.

The only real atrocity I felt was the SIU guy over EC's back at the end. How can you not call that?? <--- this is what I was thinking all last night until I calmed down and thought about 2 things. 1) Even 2-3 less turnovers and we win this game -- that's on us. and 2) Even if they had called that foul, asking EC to make 2 straight with no (or virtually no) time on the clock in a hostile environment wouldn't have been a given.

There were a million things you could point to as to why we lost.

You could see Stout rushed his 2nd of two FTs and I said to my buddy, "he just screwed up his rhythm, he'll miss the 3rd too." And he did. But you can't blame that on why we lost --- you people that are doing so are ridiculous. Lets not forget that, overall, we shot 9-11 from the foul line which is very good for this team (SIU was 7-10).

The most pivotal moment of the game was when Brooks had to sit. He left with us in the lead and came back with us down 5-7. Kwazdo is going to be a HECKUVA player and the confidence, athleticism and energy he displayed was great... but a key little turning point was his ill-advised offbalance 3-pointer relatively early in the shot clock. SIU came right back down the court and scored... it was HUGE. You can't fault KA for it because we need that kind of take charge attitude from the younger guys as well but, in the future, he'll learn that this is not the type of shot we need at that particular juncture. He'll see that when we run the offensive set, we're golden. What was odd about the 24 TOs is that when we ran the set to completion, there were some beautiful plays.

I am amazed at how many of you people continually blame the refs for losses. RIDICULOUS. Were the refs throwing some of the lazy passes that were getting picked off??? I think the real reason we lost was due to some uncharacteristic lapses in focus at very, very inopportune times. That's not just on the players' heads either, coaches can play a roll in that phase of the game.

To me this one epitomized a team loss.

They stewed on it last night on the way back but today its time to move on. Ironically, I have a much better feeling about the Drake game Saturday than I did before the "L" in Carbondale. Something tells me these boys are going to be a bit surly and take Dr. Tom and the Bulldogs to the woodshed.

One quick question... was something up with Koch and/or Viet??? We watched at a bar with no sound (and didnt get there until 10 mins left in the 1st half) so I didnt know if they got hurt or were playing sick or something but I'm looking at the boxscore and realized that neither of them even took a shot last night which seems uncharacteristic of late.

Actually, no. After the "T" we outscored them 12-8.

                    Key stats:
                    UNI Turnovers: 24
                    SIU Points off Turnovers: 29

                    SIU Offensive Rebounds: 9
                    SIU 2nd Chance Points: 14

Get over the "T" people, there were many, many, many other reasons we lost that game.

The only thing I thought about the T was I wish he'd have gotten it 2-3 minutes earlier. The calls started coming right after that. The turnovers cost us the game, although its hard to be strong with the ball when someone's handchecking and pushing all the time.

We were sloppy. I'll give credit to SIU on about half of the turnovers because they are in your shorts the whole night. The other half are on our players. Passes were lazy and we were throwing to people we hoped would be in the right position. You can't do those things with a team like SIU who has enough quickness to jump those passes.

The T was poorly timed in that it put us down 7 points. It did however get the response from the team as they appeared to get back into control. I thought the same thing Jack did at the time (bad time to get a T and it probably cost us the game). In retrospect the T may have gotten us out of the slump we were in and maybe got us one or two calls from the officials.

The reality is that if we win the rest of the games that we should win, we will likely win the conference outright. We've got a tough road ahead, especially when SIU has 6 of the next 8 at home, but we are still in pretty good shape. We need the win at Drake on Saturday. Let's go sweep the in-state title!

Really, then why did he say, "That T was a game changer"??? (perhaps he'll come back and realize he made a typo but, really, that wasn't the point of my post anyway.)

I really just wanted people to take time and read those stats... they are unreal.

What's ironic about this game is that if TBrowns three goes in, we escape after playing that poorly -- and it was pretty darn close... a great shot under the circumstances. I caught the end of Jake's pre-game interview and he was talking about not coming anywhere near 18 turnovers and I didnt know if he was talking about a previous time we played them or what they had been averaging in TO's forced or what but, regardless, I thought to myself, "If we have 18 TOs we'll lose by double digits". And yet we had 24 and still almost pulled it off.

I dont even really know what all of that means except maybe to say that even on their toughest nights, this team still has enough fight in them to keep it close and give themselves a shot.

Right on! I guess I should have made my point a little clearer. If people truly think the T cost us the game, then we can say that T. Brown missing that 3 at the end cost us the game, and Stout not getting the ball out of his hands fast enough, or the team only shooting 70% for threeland etc. Bottom line, the T conversation is pointless!

Beware: there is some sarcasm in this post.

I wish Coleman would get the ball more inside. Part of the problem, in my opinion, is that he does not work to get the ball as much as he should. But when he does, it really puts the pressure on the defensive guards to drop down and release our outside shooters. If I was an opposing coach, he would be my biggest fear.
Remember, picked for 5th in the conference this year and here we are battling for first place and an automatic bid.
