For anyone who has worked in facility management before (as I have) posts like this are annoying at best. Facility managers are constantly putting out fires all over buildings (brand new or severely old) from the time the arrive in the morning until them time they leave in the evening. Nothing is ever perfect (ticketing, parking, patrons with issues, shot clocks or scoreboards)...something will go wrong and you just have to be able to get a temporary fix during the game and hopefully you can work on the issue on a 'non-event' day and get it working correctly. But believe me...any issue in any building is getting the complete attention of the facility staff and probably of the AD and physical plant folks as well. People probably know about it all to well and are spending all of their energy to fix it...but sometimes...things break. Also, Daktronics is a pretty well-respected company in the industry...so you can't just throw a blanket over their products and say, "well...you get what you pay for."

Take it easy folks...it takes time to a.) find the bugs in a new building and b.)fix them.

This is untrue. In the 'sign' industry, they are common, but not particularly well regarded.

I agree. Just because Daktronics is EVERYWHERE does NOT make them the industry "standard". Look at GE products; they sell a lot of EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE, but a lot of times are low quality. Nike shoes are the same way. Same with SEVERAL companies in technology fields; they market the Hell out of their name/product, and people buy them. Same with Sears products...etc. That doesn't mean it's the best around though.

But I pointed out that Daktronics is the #1 supplier for the largest, most expensive, and best arenas and stadiums in the country. They dominate the NBA, NFL, and major college teams. Since when does Texas not have money to spend on a scoreboard? You're saying they do everything the best they can and make everything high quality and first class, but then they just decide to go cheap on their enourmoustron and choose Daktronics because its "cheap?"

          The logic doesnt add up.

Why didn't we go with panels like the Video board for the score boards. We should have gone with like 4 of those panels all lined up on the south wall. Two for Video, two for scores...

I thought that when they were using the Video board for the scores it was much, much easier to read than the little tiny print on the regular boards. I am only 23 I can't imagine how hard they are to read for the "more experienced" Panther Fan...

I can only tell you what people who work with those products every day say, backer. You can dismiss their professional opinion if you like.

Think about this...how often do we see some sort of "clock" error on TV...a shot clock broken, the play clock on one end of a stadium being down, etc. It happens all the time. Does that say anything?

Does the number of Daktronics equipment you see have anything to do with the low number of scoreboard manufacturuers? Just because they are common, does not mean they are quality. Also remember, many of those arenas replace their scoreboard equipment with regularity. Ask yourself why.

I thought Fairplay has the market on scoreboards??? Anyway, two things...the boards are not working properly and the set up (the way they are spaced) leaves a lot to be desired. I hope this mess will be resolved very soon.

When they put this project out for for bids, didn't they "spec" out what they wanted for a scoreboard or was that handled separately?
Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier'n puttin' it back.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

One would think that it was spec'd. Of course, all that does is shift the blame to the architect from the contractor...

We all know that when Rick is around every thing is perfect and no problems arise. We also know that he doesn't care about UNI.
I'm going to preface this by saying that I really like Rick as our AD and I think he's done some great things for UNI. But I also see the validity in madcat, jr's post. RH seems to be setting the stage to take his career to another level (i.e. interviews for AD jobs last year, reffing big time games, etc), maybe he's not as dedicated to his current position anymore. He's a talented guy and can go on to do some big things beyond where UNI can take him at this juncture of our programs and his career. Why is that idea so absurd? But I also understand that it's probably not Hartzell's job to get the videoboard repairman on the phone... I'm sure he's a very good delegator. My point is, maybe a change could be good... maybe.

I believe they purchased the boards directly from Daktronics, according to the design of the arena. They were then installed by the contractor, more specifically by a subcontractor.
