Given ISU's history of less-than-effective offenses, you'd think there would be a decent list of very experienced and talented punters in that programs history
Kirby was offered a scholly before he took one varsity punt in HS, he was a back up his junior year and then had an okay senior year. He was a true freshman last year so has technically been on ISU's campus for 13 months. And I can assure you, there isn't a sole on ISU's coaching staff that knows jack about punting who is fine tuning him. Every once and a while he might be doing some work with Jamie Cole in the summer but Kirby is working on his own, and doing quite well I might ad. He has a cannon for a leg.

Our backup punter Bieghler has one as well, I wouldn't be surprised to see him doing kickoffs next year when he is not red shirting.

Don't play both sides, Lakes, you wanted ISU to win and expressed your hatred for UNI.

Rennie was vastly improved. His TD pass in the 4th quarter was a thing of beauty.

A few contributing factors: Carlos Anderson was ineffectual, yet he was called on repeatedly in critical situations.

Our punting was weak, time and again the cyclones had a short field. ISU's punting was effective.

It appeared (from my perspective) that we were content to try to run the clock with a 6 point lead.

All that said, we don't know how good ISU is, and most importantly don't know how good UNI is. We should have answers after the games Saturday.

Yeah I know the scoop on Kirby, I was just never impressed with his leg and punting in high school. I'll admit that I only got to see him a few times outside of practice since I had graduated before he ever started. Obviously that has changed because he is a very solid punter now (All-Freshman pick for P last year in the Big XII, wasn't he), but when I hear "best punter in ISU history" I'm just curious as to whether that is just talk or has some fact to it.

Not saying it can't be true, but I havent seen him punt for quite awhile other than a game or two so I honestly can't give an informed opinion as to his talent level. If it's true that's awesome because he is a great individual and a wonderful teammate and I'm very glad to see him doing well, hoepfully he'll make some NFL $$ in the future and remember some of his high school buddies and if he really isn't that great, then oh well he's still a great kid.

What was the point of this again..... I've lost myself in my own ramblings

He's certainly an acquired taste though I have to say.
"I think they're very good," Farley said of the preseason top 25 Hawkeyes. "But so are we."

Good post, agree with all of it. To add to the Anderson thing, our "regular" rushing offense needs to improve. By that I mean designed running plays. Rennie improvising had to really boost our average yardage per carrie. Anderson and Johnson are obviously weapons, so we need to get things figured out in the run game and improve.

Here is a link to the Waterloo Courier, closest to the "home town" newspaper for the UNI football team. This is a direct link to the sports area, where game day coverage, as well as during the week coverage of the team takes place:
