Confused??

So tonight, no Viet and a good deal of Reed. Anyone have any thoughts on that. Every game seems like a completely different group logging minutes together. Still looking for our best line-up?

My thoughts on this are as follows, nothing personal is meant to anyone...

1) Viet- I think Jake has finally realized that if he is in the game you are playing 4 on 5 on defense. He is not quick enough to guard anyone that you could match him up with. This team has to win on the defensive end, and in that case Adam Viet does not help you win ballgames. He has not been a consistent enough shooter to justify taking the defensive risk.

2) Reed- I thought Carlton was fantastic defensively and that he earned himself a bunch of minutes going forward tonight. He did a great job helping on the defensive end and his on the ball defense was above average. He is still a hair behind Montgomery on the ball, but his help is much better.

3) Haak- I thought that Brian Haak had his best game as a Panther tonight. He has now shown that he is more than capable of playing 3-6 minutes a night and being effective in a short stretch. If we can steal minutes with him, Josten is going to have the opportunity to be much more effective as we move into February and March.

I think Jake has now kind of settled on the lineup you are going to see for the rest of the year and it looks like this-

Starters- Josten, Dunham, Brown, Koch, Eglseder

Bench (in order)- Coleman, Montgomery, Reed, O'Rear, Haak, Green, Viet, Molstead

I am guessing that they decided to redshirt Lundburg after all, along with Barz...

Lundburg has played, thought he couldn't redshirt if he played regular season.

Would agree on Reed. He needs to find his shot though. Looked bad again tonight.

That and the fact that Jake likes to use lineups who are the best matchups for different teams in the conference.

He is still a hair behind Montgomery on the ball, but his help is much better.

I don't know that I'd agree with this. My wife turned to me during the game and asked why everyone was so in love with Montgomery. She thought maybe it was his hair.

To the casual basketball eye (my wife), Montgomery looks kind of out of control on the court on a regular basis. I'm not gushing over him the way everyone else is on here. I think he's done fine and gotten some great experience as a freshman, but that's about it.

Carlton's shot WILL start to fall.

You can't get more Reed without less of someone. There's only 200 minutes in a game and only 5 guys can play at once...so if you want more of one player...you're going to get less of another. It's simple math really.

I agree. As much as I feel for Viet in his senior campaign, if Reed is healthy, there's no reason whatsoever that he should be sitting on the bench. He's going to go through some adjusting periods, but that's to be assumed. He'll come through it and be a force for this team.

If less Viet means more Reed, it's all good. I do think Viet could've been used last night however. It's his senior year and we were playing Evansville.

Stay tuned - Viet will have his opportunity yet and he WILL come through. Like Matt Trump stated earlier, it depends on the match ups. Viet will rise to the occasion.

I loved the lineup he had out there. I love every line up that touches the floor for us because it is the right move by the coach

People have been saying that for the 5 years he's been here. Unless he gets quicker on the D end, he is not of use on the floor. And it's going to take more than a 3 or two to fall before this opinion changes. Keep him on the bench and keep Reed, Montgomery, Brown, and Haak in the game.

I totally understand trusting the coach. I get it. There is a reason he is the coach and not us.

But are you going to tell me that every single person he puts on the floor during a game, you are going to approve of? What if Jake puts 5 monkeys in diapers out on the court to play? Are you going to approve of that?

I don't hate coach Jake. I think he is doing a great job right now and I hope he continues to do a great job. I just think that there are times, and this is with every coach, where you look at the line-up out on the floor and go "What the hell"?

Fortunatly, there have only been a handfull of those moments with Jake.

Of course I would trust take if he threw 5 monkeys in diapers out there. Hell I'd trust him more if they were naked and shaved monkeys infested with rabies though!!!!!!!!

He is the coach I trust anything he does. There is a reason he is the coach, and i am a washed up high school basketball player that didn't learn what I know from a 4 time NAIA All American and a National Champion that turned our school from a 3 win team a season maybe to a team that competes to go to state every year (including a state title). NONE of that matters. It doesn't matter that I have a coaching license and have coached basketball before, and have been playing on a team since 1st grade. I don't know anything about basketball. Jake, however, was an assistant to Coach Mac and is now the head coach of a D1 school. He knows everything that is best

I do think he's showing potential to be able to compete with John Moran and/or a late signing recruit next year as solid back-up to Kwadzo.
