Re: I hate the 3 point basket

The line between effective sarcasm and just plain stupidity isn't that fine news. You crossed it on about the third word of your nonsense.

Once again, John Wooden...newsbreaker...John Wooden...Newsbreaker...hmmmm. Yep, I'm gonna have to go with John Wooden and of course Gonzo.

Even the NCAA agrees with me which is why they voted to move the line back, not far enough, but it's a step to correct the damage the 3 pointer has done to the game.

I also think we should surround the court with a chain-link fence as well, like it used to be. No more electric lights either, it makes it too easy to see. Basketball used to be a game for those with fantastic eyesight...now anyone can see what's happening. I don't like the digital scoreboards either. My grade school gym had a clock that contained only the numbers 1-8 in a circular format. You needed a degree in advanced mathematics to know how much time was left...I think each "tick" was worth 1.75 seconds. That's the way the game is meant to be played.

The ball shouldn't bounce as easily as it does either. And the basket should be mounted on a wall.
Don't forget the peach baskets, too. Having someone fish the ball out of those will slow down the game quite nicely.

This isn't about UNI basketball, however this is a good opportunity to debunk one of the persistent myths about UNI, that we are, or ever were a good three point shooting team.

I'd be willing to bet that at least 2, if not all 3, of the NCAA years we lost more games then we won thanks to the 3 point rule.

Adopting the trapezoid lane (get "camping" out of the game)
Eliminating the "double-bonus" (make kids hit the first to earn the second the whole game)
Going back to a jump ball for a held ball situation. (reward good defense)
Don't allow time-outs when the ball is loose on the floor (scramble)
Make players raise their hands when they commit a foul (respect the officials)
Consistent officiating (have an officials clinic with basketball coaches and players present so they know how what they're doing will be called. Have officials take player/coach input.
I agree with most of that list, however with the hand raising there is an issue there.

I agree with it, and did it in high school. However, most officials think all kids are sarcastic pieces of crap and whenever we raise our hand we get warned for a technical or just flat out get stuck with one. For some reason the officials think raising the hand is trying to "show them up". I don't know if it is the same way in college basketball officiating, but I hope not.

Other than that little problem I see I like your list

The NCAA doesn't agree with you, or they'd eliminate the line. They take an entirely different approach. While John Wooden is certainly an iconic figure in the sport, I must have missed the day they awarded him infallibility.

              Wooden on the three:

I can see the idea of the 3-point shot because they felt there was a possibility that it would open the floor for the smaller man breaking in. A defender would have to come out a little farther and if he did, then you're opening things up a little bit. I don't like the distance of the 3-point shot. I think 19-9 is too close. I think if that's worth 3 points, then a good give and go, or screen and roll for an easy basket should be worth 4 points because that involves considerably more teamwork.

I agree with all of that. However the few that I bolded would be very very difficult, if not impossible to EVER implement.

Loose ball situations have to end sometime. I like the timeout situation in that case if the official calls it correctly. They have to be able to see who has possession and not be too quick to award a timeout.

And the last point you had about consistent officiating . . . I hope you weren't too serious. You had a great list of actual things that could be changed about college basketball and then that. Officiating is what it is. Players know the rules. They just have to learn to play around and above them.

Which is pretty much what Gonzo said in the first place right. I realize we don't need to listen to Wooden when coming up with basketball's rules, but I got the feeling this became about attacking Gonzo for what Wooden said when actually, he had it pretty close. Maybe I'm just really tired this morning and didn't understand any of this. Very possible. Haven't had my morning coffee yet . . .

Re: I hate the 3 point basket

requiring a 5-10 guy to jump against a 6-10 because he had the ability to tie him up is rewarding the defense?

like i said before, it is easy for Wooden to hate the three, because he always had dominant big men. wooden deservesall the respect he gets, but the game is different now. it is played at an entirely different speed and there are more athletes on the floor. you cannot just assume that all of wooden's theories can be applied directly to todays game.

personally, i think it is better these days. people with your mindset also probably hate the NBA these days as well, because it is all "full of thugs" that "dont play defense" and "cant make a jumpshot", but yet havent watched games regularly since MJ left.

I agree with that, and would add that were Wooden 50 years old and coaching today, he'd probably be able to work the three-point shot into his game plan and use it to his advantage.

Agreed, the game has slowed down considerably since the 60s & 70s, due to the increased emphasis on half-court defense and physical interior play, along with ever-increasing time-outs.

No, that would put people in danger.

I hate gloves though. And we should go back to being able to catch the ball on one hop for an out.

Wooden tennis rackets are the way to go as well.
