    Re: Ptl

No Reed again that I saw. He wasn't there last Wed or last night.

Moran had the ankle wrap on. It was his first game...you could tell his head was swimming a little early on. But the coach of his team kept him in there for most of the game running point or 2. He has a couple new Iowa kids whose egos are already ahead of them. So when coach screams pass or rotate, that translates to dribble drive or launch a contested 3. That activity limits his ability to really run the team around. He'll be fun to watch...but as noted above, Ali is already a step ahead at this point.

AJames plays some real tough D which is nice to see. He has old Iowa Jason Price on his team, so he doesn't see the point (or ball) much. He looked comfortable as the 2. Shot selection will have to improve. He may simply have been rushing things in an effort to get in a grove...or just get up a shot for once. He is very athletic.

Reed has tendinitis in one knee per the Register. Like he didn't already have enough bad luck.

4 injuries limiting mobility in the off season-incredible. I hope this doesn't leave us a step behind to start the season as far as team chemistry and game shape.

Jon Montgomery is playing great bball right now. Shooting very well and playing tough D as always. I watched parts of each game last night. Ali and John Moran are both nice additions. John is great about distributing the ball around and keeping an offense moving. Ali is that...and a very good scoring threat. His feet never stop moving. Up tempo is really his game. He pushes it up quick and makes the offense move quickly. How will that translate to our walk-it-up and look to coach for a play to run offense?

No TBrown last night. Tough night for Pehl and young Koch having to guard Vette. AKoch and Tate/Henderson battled for a while last night. Not the most impressive defensive display by the bigs in that game.

Most of the injuries don't worry me. They seem relatively minor. The only injury which slightly concerns me is Jordan E. We don't have the depth with our big men like we do with our guards. I'm sure the coaching staff will want either Pehl or J. Koch to RS, which will leave only one big man to relieve each starter.

If this is the end of our injuries and everyone can recuperate 100% before the season begins, I think our we will be very strong.

Eglseder's injury from a medical standpoint is relatively minor. He has a great work ethic, and he should be back very, very soon. To have the same injury on the other knee is not totally uncommon (especially with the knee). Carlton's injury (bilateral Jones' fractures) is less common, and Kwadzo's bilateral labral tears is just freaky to be honest. Now that Kwadzo has both done, he should be good to go! With Kwadzo, he was practicing with the team towards the end of the season, so four months should put him just a step behind the other two scholarship point guards, but his knowledge of the system should keep him in strong competition. Before the injury though, I thought he would play more '2', but you never know.

IMO, Koch and Pehl will both probably redshirt. Rodenberg will play the '4' off the bench once the fall semester is over, and you will probably see Kerwin play more at the four as well. Montgomery and Travis are both big enough to match up small at the '4' to provide some spot minutes like Crawford did his junior and senior years at UNI. Remember, in 2006, Stout and Coleman played the 4/5 and UNI played alot of the '4' guard lineup that year. When Gruber and Schneids were seniors, it was Grubes/Schneids and then only Stout and his 11 min/game off the bench. Godfread played some too, but only 5 min/game. It's not unprecedented for UNI to be successful and only play 2-3 bigs, although not ideal! Really, the last two years are the only two years in recent years that UNI has played a 4 post player rotation. Otherwise, it's been 2-3 bigs per year.

After seeing what others are saying about Ali, Moran, and Kerwin, it makes me feel better, b/c I have been saying the same things for some time. I was thinking there for a while that I was maybe missing something!

I don't know about what is going on with Lucas. From all I've heard he is just resting his knee. He injured his knee last summer/late spring and then had some things done to clean up his knee (from what I remember reading). His need to just get in the proper shape is probably points to the right decision to take off the PTL and work on getting his knee ready to sustain a 30+ game season. Other than that, is there anything else you were looking for?

For what it's worth. He was looking like he was getting in better shape from when he came back to campus after May break.

I guess I was looking more at your analysis for the season. I know that Egs and AKoch will be our go to bigs but you mentioned both JKoch and Pehl redshirting and Rod and Dunham playing the 4 but you didn't talk about Lucas. I would expect him to get quite a bit of time also. We seem to have a team where we have some nice talent at every position and I think having Kerwin and Jon who can transition to the four makes us able to run and on the other hand playing AKoch or Lucas at the 3 makes us pretty big.

                    Re: Ptl

Yes, I guess I didn't realize I left Lucas out of the conversation. It was definitely unintentional. I see him playing around 20 min/game, and his development and health will be a necessity. I'm confident that with Jordan, Adam Koch, and Lucas, our front line is good, but with Rodenberg, Kerwin, and Jon/Travo playing some at the '4' also, it gives UNI some more depth, and allows the team to be able to keep all those guards on the team happy with minutes, and not compromise too much on the floor.

Any updates on last night's games (7-7-08)? I couldn't make it. By looking at the schedule, there was one early game that appears to have a decent share of the Panther players running with/against each other.

Jill Armstrong played Lucky Paws. Lucky Paws was outmatched at nearly every position and was trailing by 20 pts nearly the whole game. J. Montgomery looked good. His game really seems to be coming together. Good defense as always, which is seems to be something Jacobsen places high on the priority list. T. Brown didn't play. Benny J. also looked good. JM, BJ, and Matt Burks were the starting guards for Jill Armstrong. Burks was having an unbelievable night behind the arc. Nearly everything he threw up went in.

Lucky Paws had J. Moran and A. Pehl. They looked a little raw. I hope J. Moran just had an off night, because he didn't play well. Tried to force passes and ended up turning the ball over several times. Fuller and Tucker looked good. This team obviously needed some good big men to match up with ex Drake Keita and ex Cornell Naeve.

I watched half of each 7:30 game. 1st game was J. IC Ready Mix vs LL Pelling. Basically J. Koch, Dunham, and A. James vs Tate Palmer and Duez Henderson. James didn't play very much and seemed frustrated due to the lack of court time. Dunham played quite a bit and looked pretty good. J. Koch also looked good. J. Koch's team was behind by four pts with 13 seconds left and they called a set 3-pt play for J. Koch and he nailed it to pull his team within one pt!!! Unfortunately, they still ended up loosing (mostly due to a late technical four by ex. Iowa Price). I'm still amazed at how much bigger Kerwin has gotten. He is comparable (in terms of size) to the Koch brothers.

The other 7:30 game was Gatens RE vs Vinton Merchants. Featured J. Kelly, J. Johnson, Ali F., and Colton Kelly vs Gatens, Haak, J. Lickliter. Ali played well. He played point nearly the whole game. I like how hard he plays. He also seems pretty strong for his size. Haak's game didn't look like it has changed much from last season.

Sorry, I got the teams mixed up in part of my post. I just edited the post to clarify. Lucky Paws (J. Moran, A Pehl, Fuller, and Tucker) were outmatched by J Armstrong (B Jacobson, J Montgomery, M Burks, and A Keita).
