No, but the question is who do you replace him with. I think Jake is learning and hopefully improving. Unless you've got an idea of where to go next, I don't think that is our biggest problem right now.

I give Jake two more years and if they still haven't turned it around get somebody else.

I'm convinced if I was coaching some of those games we could have done better. And I'm an idiot...

            I'm sure you think so.

Do you think we can do better for the salary that we are able to pay?

I will put that into context with giving you the salaries of the most recently hired Valley coaches. Kevin McKenna at InSU is making around 250k. Jankovich at IlSU is making 400k. Simmons at UE is making 275k. Marshall at WSU is making 500k. We are able to pay Jake 150k and give him a car to drive.

So with that said, give me a name that we can attract for that salary that doesn't remind me of Sam Weaver.
First of all, what a complete cop-out. After the Auburn game you assure us that we will beat a "horrible" ISU team and go into the Valley at 9 - 2. 3 losses later, you no longer want to defend him, and blame it on "you guys" for not buying into your arguments. My guess is that you would love to defend him, but now isn't the best time to do so.

Second of all, this is BY FAR your least compelling defense of Jake yet. When you stop trying to defend his performance, and start talking about salary, it speaks volumes.

I didn't go into defending him because we have been over all of those and I would think that we all understand each others thoughts and we don't need another six page thread rehashing the same things over and over again.

Also, I respect your opinions and you are completely entitled to them. ISU is terrible and its embarrassing that we lost to them in our own building. The talk about salaries is pure realism. This program is not going to get better if we allow it to become a revolving door of underpaid coaches.

I am going to remain positive. I hope we see improvement as we head toward the Valley season and hopefully we are successful in league games. Let's hope we are playing great basketball come February!

Honest question: Are you ready to give Jake a 4th year right now no matter what, or would you be open to a change under certain circumstances.

I have never asked for Jake to be fired, and I don't think that is appropriate right now. I have said all along that I think it is a decision for the end of the year, and I would be suprised if he is let go. That said, if this team finishes at or below .500 overall, its a discussion worth having.

                    Re: Number of Conference Wins

For me to not support years 4 and 5 a true collapse would have to happen. We are talking something like a 4-14 Valley season.

However, if we are in this same boat in December 2010. I think my patience will have worn pretty thin...

If Dannen has his eye on someone else he should go get him. If not then Jake stays. Put into perspective Jake might look better than the competition for his job right now. Then again Dannen might know something about someone else and Jake might not look so hot.

Something to think about is where the funds would come from if we booted Jake. There is a relatively fixed pie to divide up. Question is, where do you as AD TD put your dollars right now? Paying Jake to coach somewhere else for 1-2 years or using that $300K differential for something else?

Its not like we are USC and have a gazillion multi-millionaires on our alumni roster. We have teachers and accountants.

No answers other than hoping that August comes around soon...

Does anyone know the details of his contract in terms of length. I'm sure Brett or PTTB could remind us.

Jake is on a 5 year with automatic renewal, meaning that he gets an extra year each March, so theoretically he is always on a 5 year deal. Hartzell gave him the auto renewal at the end of his first year.

Even I am not sure a first year coach earned that. What this means is that we are always on the hook for a minimum of three years salary, which right now would be around $540,000 right now with his annual salary increases.
