Ever since the game ended I have heard... "the coaches screwed Iowa!", "How much did UNI pay these refs?"...and a bunch of other excuses regarding the disparity in fouls and FTs.
Overall, the refs did a great job. Iowa got away with lowering their shoulders and driving in the lane and UNI got away with a couple clear outs by Pehl. The game was very evenly called. So, if it were evenly called, why the huge foul and FT difference in UNI’s favor?
***The box score shows that Iowa had 10 more fouls and UNI had 24 more FTs. Of course that would raise questions, right? But, when you actually look at it closer those numbers prove to be very skewed and misleading. ***
1st Half:
* Overall fouls in 1st half were Iowa 11 and UNI 8. Very close. The difference was that Iowa had 4 offensive fouls, which were good calls. Iowa drives to the lane and pounds a lot more than UNI, which leads to more offensive fouls. Especially when you play a good defensive team like UNI.
* In the first half, both UNI and Iowa went to the line for 1and1’s 3 times. Iowa missed all 3 front ends and UNI made all 3, giving them what seems to be a pretty big 9 to 3 edge, when in fact it would have been 6 to 9 if Iowa made their FTs, and possibly even 6 to 6 had UNI missed their front ends.
2nd Half:
* Neither team shot a FT in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half and the fouls were Iowa 3 and UNI 1. So, through 3 quarters of the game, fouls and FTs were basically even, the only difference still being UNI made front ends of 1and1s and Iowa committing stupid offensive fouls in the 1st half.
*Iowa was playing well and got it within a bucket when it all unraveled with 10 minutes to go. UNI got 1 home cooked call (Pehl extended his arm and drew a foul for 2 FT’s) and then McCabe got called for a charge (which was actually a good call) and Fran went nuts and hit a bottle off the scorer’s table. In addition, his assistant coach got called for a T as well, giving UNI 4 FTs and the ball. On the extra possession Tuttle got raked by McCabe and McCabe swats the ball, giving UNI 4 more FTs. If Fran wouldn’t have gone nuts, none of those 8 FTs would have probably happened. So, it went from 0 FTs for either team in the half to an 8 to 0 advantage for UNI.
* From the 10 minute mark to the 5 minute mark, there were just 3 fouls called, 2 on Iowa (both offensive) and 1 on UNI. FTs were Iowa 1 to UNI 0. Again, very evenly called even after Fran had gone crazy.
* During the final 5 minutes, the FTs were Iowa 6 to UNI 14. Again, this is inflated due to Fran’s Ts. The foul difference was actually only 1 with Iowa having 7 and UNI 6. Thanks to Fran, instead of UNI drawing just their 4th and 5th fouls around the 5 minute mark and having to take the ball out-of-bounds, they were in the bonus. UNI turned those 2 extra 1and1 opportunities into 4 more made FTs. Of course, these 4 extra made FTs (a direct result of Fran’s first boneheaded T) made Fran explode and he went nuts again (chasing the ref around the court and having to be escorted by police), giving UNI yet again 4 more FTs (2 for the T and 2 more with the extra possession that UNI got due to Fran’s T). So again, if it weren’t for the T’s the FT difference would have been Iowa 6 to UNI 6 (4 extra 1and1 makes and 4 extra due to Fran’s T and extra possession UNI got from it).
Summary:
*Basically, if it weren’t for their Coach (and missed front ends of 1and1s), Iowa would have had a pretty good chance to upset UNI. Iowa would have only ended up with 19 fouls (6 of which were offensive) to UNI’s 15. And, instead of there being a 9 to 33 difference in shot FTs, it would have been Iowa 13 to UNI 17.
