Re: Sick of People Blaming Refs
I have been frustrated with some of the officiating for UNI games during the year and I admit that I am obviously bias on those games.
However watching a lot of college basketball this year I think this may have been one of the worst seasons I can remember for college officiating with officials being out of position, assuming calls, and compounding one mistake with multiple mistakes, a long with this going to the monitor so many times this year.
I don't know if it is that the officiating base is getting older and unable to keep up with the game, or if it is something else
I don't expect officials to be perfect, but when so much money and possibly a coaches job depends on some of their calls mistakes should be at a minimum.
Also the Baylor women's coach had no right to complain about the officiating in that game last year, as women's officials go (the game not the officials themselves) they were very good, and called the game by the book.
Sorry for my rant
One last thing, a good team shouldn't leave the outcome of a game/match up to the official.

How to take officiating out of the equation... Be ahead by more than 3 points, or not reach into a player shooting an off balance desperation 3 in the last seconds.Originally posted by achrist70 View Posta good team shouldn't leave the outcome of a game/match up to the official.
Couldn't agree more, as frustrating as it is at times.

Re: Sick of People Blaming Refs
Let's use this one incident to prove all officials are bad and the reason our teams lose.
Not all officials are perfect. Actually, none of them are. The game has gotten to bogged down and physical. When officials then call a tight game, fans are pissed because their players were in foul trouble and the game had no flow due to all the foul shots. When they let guys play and get physical, it is a low scoring slug fest and fans are upset because their player took some contact and didn't get a call. Personally, I would love to see a year or two of games with both teams shooting 30+ free throws until players/coaches get the message and get rid of hand checking, grabbing cutters, etc. Some games start out physical and then needed to be calmed down and tightened up. An example of this would be our game at Indy St. The 1st half was physical, the 2nd half everything was called, including the foul at the final horn. The fans don't like it, but often times it is necessary to bring the physicality of the game back to manageable levels before it gets out of hand.
The block/charge call and the new arc also aren't making it easy for an official. Their is too much for the ref to take in and process in that period of time on a call that could go either way most times. The other thing with college officials is they are often working with different partners every night out and it takes them a while to get in a groove with how they are going to call the game.
It's a tough profession. I find it interesting though that most people that complain about the officials are people who have never officiated a game and have no understanding of how different it is on the court compared to in the stands.

Hoopfan, you are right on. Does anyone really set a screen anymore or do you just move around trying to get into someone's way, maybe a little shove, stick out your leg or hip. Teams like Louisville hand check all day long and don't get called, because the ref's know they are going to do it.
I think if they cleaned up the game, the refs would have an easier time calling the game. Currently, you could call a foul or 3 second call everytime down the court.

That's Edward F. Rush, to you sir.Originally posted by SteinPizza View PostI agree in part with what you said above, but man, what a screwed up situation in the article. You would think a veteran NBA ref would know better than that. If Ed Rush is still in that job next year, the PAC 12 forfeits a lot of credibility, IMOGo Panthers!

Great Post, Some of the games I watched this year were brutally officiated and its because their in a no win situation. If they call too many fouls then fans get upset. If they call too few of fouls then the fans are saying their horrible.Originally posted by hoopfan View PostLet's use this one incident to prove all officials are bad and the reason our teams lose.

The thing I noticed and its something I have been noticing is the age of the officials. Some of these guys are getting up there in age and they struggle to make it down the court. Also another thing is these guys are over-worked. During championship week I saw (bo boroski, teddy valentine, and Lamont Simpson) on tv every single night working a different conference championship game. These guys reffed 5 games in a week, that is way TOO many when you include travel time and game time.
I have officiated for years now and this year has been pretty bad from an officials standpoint. The NCAA needs to discuss this at seasons end and enforce to the coaches that their going to start to call the games tighter. The NCAA also has to get some new blood into the system, because some of these guys are getting older and the game pace is getting faster.

Good call on the age of some of these guys. Its almost painful to watch guys like Ed Hightower and Jim Burr still try to get up and down the floor. You just can't be a good official when you are always playing catch up.Originally posted by PantherHawk View PostGreat Post, Some of the games I watched this year were brutally officiated and its because their in a no win situation. Then you have guys that are still good officials that know when to step away. Steve Welmer did a couple of years ago, Steve Olson stopped after last year, and I heard last night that Scott Thornley has decided to retire after this year. Would much rather see a guy go out working an Elite 8 game like Thornley did on Sunday than to see a guy hold on for way too long...

Re: Sick of People Blaming Refs
I agree officiating is difficult. What bothers me is the inconsistency of calls made. All too often during a game the same situation is called 2 different ways. It's hard for players and coaches to figure out how a game is being called. I also agree on the ages of officials - many getting too old and out of shape. I have wondered about a 4th official added - someone who will watch for traveling, 3 second, DDribble...just a thought
