Re: Sick of People Blaming Refs

its a tough job. so are a lot of jobs. if i showed the same level of incompetence as some refs, or a conflict of interest like Ed Rush, i wouldnt even be given the opportunity to clean out my desk. i would be fired, arrested, and sued.

Those of us who work high school games know certain coaches have reputations. We occasionally talk to each other about these coaches. That said, I'd like to think I call the game the same way for coaches with reputations as I do for those who don't, or coaches I don't know.

I will say, that coaches who generally don't complain a ton occasionally get more leeway to make the occasional comment. If coach A who almost never complains says "that was a horsesh*t call," I'm more apt to warn him/her and more likely to T up coach B who complains almost every trip down the floor. As for the action on the court though, it really should have no effect.

I have worked with officials who hold grudges against certain coaches and all it does is make the game that much harder to work. I worked with one official who T'd up a coach 2 minutes into a game because he was complaining about a call (at halftime the ref told us that he had the same coach 2 weeks prior and he was a real prick to him during that game, so he deserved it). Me and my partner were like "whoa buddy" just cause he was a prick to you last week doesn't make it right to T him up. We shared with him how we handle those types of coaches and that you move on.

I agree that some of these guys do have a quick whistle and are inconsistent, but you have to remember that you are seeing the game through a TV and not the officials eyes. They have different angles at times and that is the most important thing. What may look like a charge in your eyes, was a block from their angle. I usually never bash or rip officials unless it is warranted because I have been in their shoes. I have had cuss words yelled at me and people threaten me. No official will ever walk off the court/field and tell you they called the perfect game, it just doesn't happen. These guys will make mistakes at times. I personally just do not get how some of these bball officials work so many games in one week. I do 3-4 games a week between high school & small school college. These Div 1 guys are working at least 4-5 games a week. I'm dead after 4 games and I'm somewhat young.

i complain about refs all the time. i think that its a good ole boys club that is generally incompetent because of a lack of adaptability, athleticism, and ability to separate emotion from the job.

9 year you have described the Iowa High School Athletic Association officials perfectly.

sports make a ton of money. i just dont understand the concept of not paying not a wage and establishing a feeder program that incents talented individuals to enter and grow into the profession. it works perfectly for baseball.

Question: How does what Ed Rush told a room of 7 officials turn into, "Sick of people blaming refs. It's a loser mentality. They do the best they can."?

Do you think Bennet getting T'd up was a good call?

i was being sarcastic. i was upset about the inconsistent reffing in a UNI game a few weeks back and posters said that i have a loser mentality and that i shouldnt be complaining about refs.of course this loser mentality was a product of my iowa fandom and being beaten as a child.

This is 100% correct in Iowa and with most athletic associations throughout the US. To advance or work higher level games, you need to know someone. You look at the state tournament in DSM and it is typically the same groups of officials year after year and will continue to be that way. It is a far from perfect system and one that discourages new blood from sticking around to work their way up.

I agree, there are some great officials who never get a chance to work a state tournament because the "good old boys" club. I knew an official in the eastern part of the state who worked 8 years in Iowa and never got a tournament assignment, even after several coaches had recommended him to work. So he went over to Illinois and works and has done their state championships a few times in the last 10 years. He works deep into the tournament every year and he actually has moved up to Div 2 and possibly some Div 1 stuff now. Hard to believe that an official worked 8 years and never got 1 tournament game (even small school).

I gave up officiating this past year but if you want to move up in Iowa high school and some college stuff you have to go to the camps of the officials who schedule each conference. So basically you have to pay them each year to get any games. Pretty crappy and def discourages younger officials from continuing their careers.
