Re: Getting Students in the Mac

Students probably won't come to this game (as a student I'm speaking for what I've heard) there are playoff games Sunday and they'll watch football and drinking beer all Sunday. Im a huge Colts fan but Im going to the UNI game on Sunday.

I hate the Colts quite a bit, but that is disgusting. At least we don't have the Broncos in there, though.

This problem of student attendance at UNI events is age old. My belief is that the if the students recognize the fact that the people on the floor are their classmates and are a representative of them then the student fans should have a greater appreciation of what the players do in the game and should be more supportive. If Washpun dunks, they all dunk.

UNI athletics promotes this fact that they are "students first." Coach Jake and Farley do a good job promoting this with their actions and comments before and after games. I have the impression that our students have never had an interest, feel that they themselves could do better (that they are a former athlete or currently an athlete)or there is a better product somewhere else they would rather watch and support.

The one gripe I may add about our athletes supporting one another is that when they do come they don't stand for the school song. Some of our coaches have done so also (not stood). So maybe if there is a detachment of our athletes it may resonate through the student body. Just saying.

Surprised though against MO State it was a televised game , kinda figured the students would come out for that, I know the Athletic Dept. is looking for ideas to, its just really sad how the students dont have more school pride, do you see allot of kids wearing UNI stuff at IA City and Ames ? I mean like some of these games what else can you do on 5 bucks ? I know its been a old problem just really sad that the kids here dont have the school spirit like Iowa or ISU and the more sad thin g is there are plenty of UNI students in those crowds

Start selling the seats that are currently held for students, and not just during breaks. Fill those seats with the general public and then the McLeod is full and loud and maybe students will feel more of a sense of urgency to get tickets and get to the game before their allotment is sold out. If student demand rises as a result then great. If not then at least you have sold the seats and have people that want to be there in cheering for UNI.

There is no allotment for students that they reserve and get tickets from. They scan an ID card so you'd need a big change in the way things are conducted in order to get to the system some of you are suggestion. A change that sounds similar to an old and inconvenient process that the Athletic Dept use to have in place.

I'm not saying that what we have is working right now but going back in time is rarely the right solution to much of anything.

Hopefully, a great MVC run and spending the entire season ranked in the Top 25 will help build some support for the team, both among students and non-students. Let's use the bandwagon to help build the fanbase.

No, but they hold back a number of seats for students for every game. Not sure how many it is, but they just don't sell those seats to the general public in hopes that students will fill them. That is why they decided to sell those seats during break. They knew there wouldn't be many / any students there so they sold the seats instead of holding them. For the SDSU game, had 1,000 students suddenly showed up for the game at tip off they wouldn't have gotten in. Their section was full and sold out. Start selling some of their seats in the corners for $10 and tell students that only the first "x" will get in as that is all the student section has now due to decreasing student attendance. And that it is UNI's hope that there will be an increased demand in the coming weeks so that they can go back to a larger student section again as it was intended.

By the way, I just want butts in the seats and a good home atmosphere. I'd prefer it to be students, but if it is the general public so be it. Better than empty seats. And the extra revenue is always a good thing, too.

Not exactly. But they are a sunk cost for the students.
