    Re: Valley Transfers/Exits 2015 Edition

WSU, UNI, IlSU, LU-C, UE, DU, BU, and MSU have already all committed to offering the cost of attendance. I don't think that's an issue at all...

Has the MVC indicated that they will mandate the cost of attendance for any sports yet?

What has UNI committed to? MBB, VB, Wrestling, ???

I can understand that. Just seems like a lateral move at best.

But then again maybe he is the man to put them over the top.

            Valley isn't mandating anything.

UNI will eventually provide for Men's and Women's Basketball and possibly volleyball.

Men's basketball will be first and will start as soon as the NCAA allows it.

Very frustrating. This league could be pretty good if we could keep the best talent from constantly transferring.

Here is the excerpt from TD's State of the Panthers

1 – Cost of Attendance. While the NCAA passed several resolutions at its January meeting, Cost of Attendance (COA) is the most impactful. Today, a scholarship is defined as room, board, tuition, fees and books. At UNI, an in-state scholarship is valued at approximately $16,000 and an out-of-state scholarship is worth around $24,000. We have about 180 student-athletes on scholarship, with the majority of those receiving a full scholarship.

Each institution has, for financial aid purposes, a value that is also considered a part of the “cost of attendance” which includes transportation, incidentals for living, laundry, etc. At UNI that number is approximately $2,300 for an in-state student and $2,600 for an out-of-state student. Nationally COA ranges from $1,500 to $5,000+. Effective with the start of the 2015-16 year, this “cost of attendance” is now a part of a scholarship. Thus, if we adopt COA, the value of a scholarship will increase significantly. If we were to adopt it across the board, we would incur nearly $400,000 in new expense.

President Ruud is actively engaged in deciding how to implement COA on our campus. He has been a strong voice in the Missouri Valley Conference as well. Here are the absolutes:

                · The Missouri Valley Conference will mandate COA in certain sports.

                · UNI will not (cannot) provide COA across the Board, but will provide COA where required by the MVC, and perhaps in other isolated cases.

                · It is unlikely that FCS football programs will offer COA.

                · There is no new money to provide for COA. Funding will have to be allocated from other areas in the department.

                · COA will be distributed in a manner that is gender equitable.

This is the new “Cost of Doing Business” at the Division I level. The next few weeks will determine how much of that cost of doing business the MVC, and in turn UNI, is willing and able to provide. You will hear FBS schools blustering about cutting sports to provide COA. UNI will not reallocate funds by cutting sports to provide COA. I expect that our peer group of schools will offer fewer scholarships in the future. In other words, larger scholarships allocated among fewer people. The pie won’t grow, but will be shared by fewer people.

Good point. This absolutely sucks about Lynch, but I also wonder if he was close with the assistant who died in the plane crash? An odd, tragic event like that is a variable that could be huge. In other words, if he was wavering about this, and then, bam, gets hit with that news. Who knows, it's just speculation.

Maybe Lynch's opinion of Muller and his program isn't that high

I didn't realize that Lynch's dad is Kevin Lynch, the All Big Ten player from the Gophers Sweet 16 team in the late 80s. Not hard to see why he went back to Minnesota, but very disappointing for the Valley, though.

They were very close. The coach was his mentor and worked with Lynch 1-1.

You know you're getting old when the cost of incidentals is roughly the same as the full cost of attending UNI when you were in school.

Here is a fun stat for you younger folks. My senior year, in-state tuition went up by 50% - from $200 per semester to $300!!! (Because of the legislature, what else!) The financial aide office was open extra hours for consultation & one-time scholarships. Sounds silly, but it was a big deal back then. 45 years ago. Ouch!

It is unfortunate for the Valley and especially ILSU, but the silver lining in the cloud is that 2nd place seems much more easily attainable now for next season.
