  • Ashton to UNI!

Jordan Ashton will transfer to UNI for his final season next year. I thought we would have a chance with him but that was before Rhodes committed.

Seems odd to pick up two guards, are we missing something? I was looking forward to watching Haldeman and Mccloud play and had heard good things about both. Does Mccloud or Brown red shirt now to balance out that freshman class?

Not that it is bad( I think he is a good player and adds depth), I just find it a little unusual.

No risk here whatsoever. Either let the scholarship sit empty for a year, or sign a kid for 1 year that could potentially help us. Just as the Rhodes signing did, it adds depth, experience, and scoring to the guard court.

With the scholarship, there is no risk. I would agree.

But I also don't think he would come here without an idea of decent playing time. And I don't think Jake wants to anger any freshman who we are high on. Just a dynamic to consider. IMO

I now expect Brown to redshirt. And possibly McCloud but that is less likely.

I'll be pretty surprised if either of them redshirt, Brown is a freak athletically and is 2 or 3 inches taller than Ashton.

Ashton is here to be a bit longer defender than we have at the 2 with Lohaus and Haldeman and also provides protection for those night Morgan ends up in foul trouble as he's going to get the other teams best player every night. I also think the signing means that Morgan is the only guy that even approaches averaging 30 minutes.

Any offense Ashton provides is a total bonus.

If no one redshirts, that's an awful lot of players for essentially 3 positions, and one of those will be the best player on the team.

I don't think its a bad thing at all I just think these last 2 commits could change the way we think about redshirting, etc. It could also allow us to balance our scholarship distribution.

But time will tell. An article by Jeremiah will hopefully add clarity to the situation.

I suppose it's good to use the final scholarship on an experienced player. We can't go too far wrong with a one-year commit. However, this young man didn't play much on a team that didn't have a lot of depth and could have used another body on many occasions. Why? If he's not good enough to play regularly on a team we beat that was quite short-handed, how much can he help us?

                Re: Ashton to UNI!

I'm guessing Rhodes may redshirt. That would put a scholarship into the sophomore class and allow us to recruit a 2019 HS kid.

Ashton's signing allows us to keep an open scholarship for the 2017 HS class to pair with Phyfe. If he plays, great. If not, he adds experienced depth with a little size for odd occasions like end of first half foul issues with the primary rotation players.

Jake's been high on McCloud for awhile so I doubt he redshirts and as others have mentioned, Brown coming from Texas may be hard to redshirt. Plus the last description I heard about him from Jake was that he was a shooter like Bohannon in Jeremy Morgan's body. Yikes.

I wondered this too, but, the staff would have game tape against Big 12 competition to study. And, ISU plays a different style than we do. Sure, they lacked depth, but their regulars were all pretty damn good. Also, a single game result isn't a good way to judge Ashton's ability to play at UNI.

Are you serious? I was just joking when I posted yesterday in another thread about Ashton transferring to UNI.

This is a good pickup, no risk with the scholarship, possibly allows another red-shirt somewhere if coach and a player want to go that route.

I agree, seems odd at first look. The guy averaged ONE POINT per game on 35% shooting. I trust Coach Jake sees something not obvious to us average fans or would hope there were better options for a one year player. Hope it works!

He is more of a defensive player, something that really isn't well received at Iowa State

ISU really never struggled with Guard depth either. He's not coming here to be a star, but could be a valued piece. Think about this. UNI has 8 new guys on scholarship (including last years redshirts) to replace Washpun, Jesperson and Bohannon. Even if Lohaus and another redshirt, that's 6 new guys. UNI could be scary good next year.
