  • 2016 PG - who starts, who red shirts?

    Point Guard:
    Juwan McCloud - True Freshman
    Spencer Haldeman - Redshirt Freshman
Jordan Ashton - GradTrans from Cyclones.
Hunter Rhodes - Junior - JCTransfer
Rafael de Souza - Sophomore WalkOn

I have seen McCloud listed as the likely starting PG.
However, Jordan, Spencer, and Rafael will not redshirt. Jordan is a grad transfer; we'll have him for one year. And Spencer already redshirted. I think Rafael is unlikely to redshirt. But I know so little about him. So???

If we're going to use Jordan a lot, would it make sense to redshirt Juwan and Hunter?

They will all play and get minutes except de Souza.

Remember, we are replacing 3 experienced guards who all played heavy minutes.

        Juwan starts

I'm pretty sure Jordan is not a PG

Correct. He was brought in as a wing defender. Not much offensively, but really good defender.

That's good. Morgan is one guy we don't want to burn out with too many minutes. If Jordan can carry some of the weight against some of the better wing players we'll see, that's big.

What about Rhodes? Do any of you have a feel for whether he can contribute, and how?

Morgan is our best point guard. If Luke develops, the line up of Morgan, Lohous, Carlson, McDonnell, and Koch would be sweet to run at times.

If McCloud isn't starting at PG by the time the MVC season starts I'll streak the quad.

McCloud is the PG of the future, and likely this year as well. Haldeman can play point and SG-and Jake has always liked having 2 ball-handlers on the floor. I see Lohaus playing quite a bit in the 1 or 2 role, so I think those 3 make the rotation.

As was said about Ashton, not his position. Same for Morgan, though he is experienced enough we may use him as trigger man occasionally. De Souza I think is practice player.

The one I am curious about is Hunter Rhodes. I don't foresee us red-shirting a juco, but it would help to balance classes as there are no sophomores this season/juniors next season for the recruiting class of 2019

                      Ok that's helpful. I didn't notice that he's 6'4".

That gives us with 3 quality SGs (Jeremy, Jordan, Isaiah) - plus Wyatt, who could do PG or SG.

This team is so deep. It's going to be weird compared with last year.

There will be a whole bunch of different combinations on the floor as the year progresses. We will be one of the toughest teams to scout and scheme against.

I like the thought of being a tough team to scout and scheme against. We are likely to see some great coaching this year from Coach Jacobson.

Love this years depth. We sometimes forget how important the Sweet 16 teams depth was. The starters played the big minutes and lead the team. However, having Anthony James and Marc Sonnen come in and pressure a guy for 3 minutes full court was extremely tiring for another team to know that Kwadzo or Ali were coming back in. Sweet 16 bench =James, Sonnen, Dunham, O'Rear, and Jake Koch. All guys understood their role. This years success will depend a lot on understanding roles.

Its too early to say we have depth. We have a lot of players, yes, but we don't really know how good they are going to be yet. We aren't just going to play 11 guys just to say we are deep, they have to be able to play.

We have up to 6 players vying for minutes that have not played a single minute in a Panther uniform yet. Its going to take time.
