That was the placeholder image used during the strategic planning presentation. Harris said that wasn’t a final design.

Has he since come out and confirmed that would be the court?

I actually like that design. Simple, bigger center court logo, getting away from the different wood stain colors. The only thing I would maybe change would be coloring in the paint area.

Too plain for my liking and I'd MUCH prefer 'UNI Panthers' on the baselines rather than 'Northern Iowa'.

I know Hartzell was desperate for money when building the McLeod Center but it would be so nice if we didn't have to have the Robert J McCoy Court on there (nothing against the family, they're UNI through and through and are fantastic people). That should have been Eldon Miller Court with the cool signature image that you see a lot of places.

Is the McCoy name on the court permanently, or is it just through a certain year? I also do find it odd they want us to be more commonly known as UNI, yet they're putting Northern Iowa on the court.

            Forever.

I believe the McLeod name can come off in 2026, however.

It’s why I can’t see that being the design.

Wait I thought we wanted to be known as NOIA??? So confused...

I would like to see UNI Panthers on the baseline... That would be a great change. The state outline with the panther head would also be a cool center court option matching the football field.
If computers ruled college basketball the way they do football, we'd have skipped all this March Madness monotony and just waited a month for the Kansas-Kentucky title game. And watched Northern Iowa play Cornell in the Poulan Weedeater Bowl. ~ Dwight Perry The Seattle Times

I like "Northern Iowa" on the baselines, especially with a huge UNI and logo panther at center court.

Which is in direct violation of UNI’s own branding standard - specifically related to athletics branding.

Which part exactly? UNI is the standard for abbreviations for TV, etc but does it say you can't use Northern Iowa other places? This would be different than a logo. I have only briefly skimmed but haven't seen anything.

Page 27. Says 'UNI' is the preferred reference for pretty much every situation.

Though, we don't follow it on the ESPN3 games we produce so its awfully difficult to expect others to. 'N Iowa' looks absolutely ****ing terrible.

                          Gotcha. Thanks

Although I would think this would be an acceptable use.

Well CBS uses NOIA... That's about as bad as it gets. Either way, both of those need to stop. Should be nothing other than UNI for athletics.

                              This.

Notice there is no “Northern Iowa” word-mark registered by athletics, only UNI and Panthers. Athletics has made it so that Northern Iowa is the academic side, and UNI is the athletic side. Many, non-P5/R1/high major athletics, schools do this with their branding. Look at the social media profiles of athletics, and it’s teams. It’s all branded UNI. Uniforms no longer say Northern Iowa.

When it comes to referring to UNI athletics in the press the first time the school is referenced is to be Northern Iowa. After that the branding regulations are to use only UNI and/or Panthers.

Now, has the athletic department faltered in actually enforcing this? Yes.

Would Putting Northern Iowa on the court hurt the marketing and branding efforts that have been made since Harris’s hire? I would argue yes.

Im a big fan of the “Northenr Iowa” jersey look we had until recently for basketball. I preferred Panthers on the front of the football uniforms to UNI. However, the effort has been made to ensure it is UNI. The athletic department needs to ensure this continues, and gets more strict. Putting Northern Iowa on the court would be a massive branding misstep.

The official twitter account says "The Official Twitter site for University of Northern Iowa Athletics..." in the bio.

I get what you are saying and I don't think its going to happen but putting it on the edge of the court doesn't seem like a violation to me.

A quick search of the bookstore (owned by UNI) has multiple shirts with Northern Iowa on it. Shirts obviously intended for an athletic audience. While the emphasis is certainly on UNI and that's good.I think this was a perfectly reasonable suggest by UNIDad and in no way hurts the brand.
