It's not a "herd mmentality" for others to be happy about winning. Or to ask legitimate questions about why you always seem to only show up to rain some "doom and gloom" complaining about something.

Mudra pissing and moaning about "liberals" and "millenials" = least surprising development ever. Go watch Faux News and let us talk about our Panthers, ya old curmudgeon.

It's unfortunate that this becomes a Dahl v McDonnell debate because Dahl only gets in the game when McDonnell goes out. They are completely different players with different skill sets. Dahl is a true 5, McDonnell is I guess a hybrid of some sort because the modern game is a guards game and the traditional positions don't apply as much. He obviously isn't a center or a power forward, so I would say he is a small forward even though he has height. Jake doesn't like to play 5's for whatever reason, Mudra and I are old school enough to believe a big strong man in the middle is a beautiful thing. What can I say, I grew up watching Wilt and Bill. Hence we would like to see Dahl play more, and in my case anyway especially when the other team has a big man in the middle. To argue that Luke is just as effective playing the 5 against those type players is silliness, he gets taken to school by them. I know nothing is going to change this season, but I'd love to see what Dahl could do if he played meaningful minutes. As I said I don't like comparing them, but if you look at conference play Justin leads Luke in field goal percentage and field goals and rebounds per minute played. He has almost twice as many blocks in just over a third of the minutes. Luke leads substantially in assists and free throws made per minute and commits fewer turnovers. Assists is a useful stat, but misleading and overrated as another player has all the control over whether you get an assist or not. If you throw the ball out to a guard with 3 seconds left on the shot clock and he fires up a 26 foot desperation shot with a hand in his face you should not get an assist whether it goes in or not. And as I said earlier in this thread when you set a screen that lets another player get a wide open 15 ft jump shot that should earn you an assist even though no pass is involved. I'd like to see them both play at the same time just once also. Seems like Luke at the high post feeding Justin at the low post could be very effective. We are playing well and are on a roll, but I fear there will be at least once in the next 5 games that smarter substitution would have made the difference.

This may work if we had post depth, but we really don't. You're not going to burn your two posts at the same time. Also, you skimmed over the assist stat, but we run our offense through Luke at the high post. So passing and less turnovers is crucial. Luke is better than Dahl in that regard. I would imagine both will be seeing less minutes next year when we have a couple more big bodies to put in.

Is this new offense something suggested by Seth/European BB? Something that JD was not recruited for? Glad that he stuck around. Hope he can help out more this year and has some more opportunities next year.

The new offense was installed by Seth and Erik Crawford. You'll see in our recruiting that we're going to look for more bigs with hybrid skills. This thing is made for Cole Henry, kid was a point guard until his sophomore year when he started growing. Luke has done a helluva job triggering it.

Playing Dahl and McDonnell together would be a disaster. NOBODY plays two bigs together in our league. I have no idea how we'd try to guard anybody if Luke had to guard the perimeter. Our offense if effective and open because Luke at the top of the key pulling everything away from the bucket, not sure why we'd clog up the lane with two big bodies AND give Luke a more challenging matchup against a quicker guy. We are leading the league in offensive efficiency, I don't think we need to reinvent anything right now.

                BC,

This may belong on the recruiting forum but while we're on the subject, what do you expect for redshirts next season?

I would guess that one of Carter, Henry, Betz will play and the others will redshirt. My money would be on Henry playing.

That would give us Phyfe, Luke, Henry, and Dahl as bigs next year, which is really formidable on paper.

Biggie should be back as well, right?

                      Yep, forgot him as well.

Unless one of the freshman are absolutely better, it may be wise just to redshirt all of them.

It's really hard to know. All signs, publicly, point to Tray Croft being able to play next year and you'd figure Croft plus a healthy Pickford account for the Lohaus minutes. If Phyfe come's back that really crunches post minutes too. We're REALLY deep next year. Great problem to have.

Henry is a great fit for the offense. You'd think his skill set could contribute right away and his body isn't too far off. I think a lot depends on where Biggie is at. If Biggie is healthy and ready to go, maybe you redshirt Henry. 20 and 11 while having to share the floor with an elite recruit is great.

Carter is a scorer and is 230. He's ready for the college game but its a minutes question. Is it worth using a year for 5-8 minutes per night? 22 and 10 in a really good high school league and a very good AAU career is very promising.

Betz is a near sure redshirt. He's going to need a year to get used to the speed of the game. I like his skill set but 18 and 10 in 1A Basketball doesn't scream high level player and he didn't hit the AAU circuit as hard as others. He's an interesting one.

                        • Betz' GHV high school is actually a 2A level program but he has always been the most likely of our incoming scholarship players to redshirt.

This is exactly correct. While I'd be ok with Dahl getting a few more minutes, it is clearly the right rotation given our offensive performance. Dahl got a couple of early looks at the basket against Valpo but then disappeared and the offensive flow started to break down with him in the game. He is clearly an impact on the defensive end but Valpo's interior game wasn't killing us so we went with the better offensive set. I can't see how having Dahl and Luke on the floor together would work.
If computers ruled college basketball the way they do football, we'd have skipped all this March Madness monotony and just waited a month for the Kansas-Kentucky title game. And watched Northern Iowa play Cornell in the Poulan Weedeater Bowl. ~ Dwight Perry The Seattle Times

                            • From what I could find on Quick stats, Henry is 0 - 10 from 3 point line. Stretch 4 is going to stretch things better if he can knock down a 3. A year to get stronger and work on his shot would sound good to me.

I'm not too concerned about that number. Tuttle was a combined 20-65 his first three years (a little over 30%) then upped that his senior year. Henry shot 30% (9-30) as a junior and 27% (9-33) as a sophomore, so he didn't even attempt as many this year. I'm a little more concerned with the 38% free throw percentage this year.
